Chelsea have secured the services of Naomi Girma, a prominent defender from the United States, for a record fee of approximately 900,000. The 24-year-old has committed to a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Women's Super League leaders, choosing Chelsea over Lyon. Girma was instrumental in the USA's Olympic gold medal win last year, contributing to clean sheets in crucial matches.

Girma's arrival at Stamford Bridge was celebrated before Chelsea's Women's Super League match against Arsenal. "I'm so happy and really excited to be here. It doesn't feel real," she expressed on Chelsea's official website. She highlighted Chelsea's culture, winning mentality, and the environment as key reasons for her decision. "It's a top environment to learn and grow in. Right now, that's what I'm looking to do. It was an easy choice for me," she added.

In 2023, Girma was honoured as US Soccer's female player of the year after leading San Diego to victory in the National Women's Soccer League Shield. Her defensive prowess was evident as she won possession most frequently in the defensive third (304) and shared the lead for progressive ball carries (548) since her debut in May 2022 until the season concluded.

During the USA's Olympic success, Girma excelled by completing more passes (610), carries (200), and clearances (31) than any other participant. Her pass accuracy stood at an impressive 95%, showcasing her exceptional skills on the field.

Paul Green, head of women's football at Chelsea, praised Naomi as a world-class defender entering her prime years.
