Chelsea Head Coach Enzo Maresca Acknowledges Team Spirit Hit Amidst Poor Performance

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca admits that the team's spirit has been affected by a poor run of form. With injuries and recent results impacting their Premier League standing, the club aims for a top-four finish despite challenges.

Chelsea's head coach, Enzo Maresca, has expressed concern over the team's morale following a challenging period since Christmas. The Blues are set to face Aston Villa on Saturday, having secured only three wins in their last 11 matches across all competitions. One of these victories was against Morecambe in the FA Cup third round. Maresca stated: "The team spirit in this moment has to be upset. We have to be upset because we are not happy with the results, we are all aware we are in a club where we are not here to survive, but to fight to win titles."

Despite their recent struggles, Chelsea remains focused on securing a top-four finish in the Premier League. Currently sixth in the table, they trail fourth-placed Manchester City by just one point. Maresca emphasised their goal: "We said many times: I think we spent almost the season in top four and with 13 games to go, the target, for sure, is top four. We will try our best to achieve that." He also highlighted injuries as a significant factor affecting their performance.

Maresca on Chelsea's Struggling Team Spirit

Aston Villa's midfielder Youri Tielemans remains optimistic about his team's chances of finishing in the Champions League spots after their 2-2 draw against Liverpool. Villa currently sits ninth in the league, five points behind the top four. Tielemans commented: "We always have to believe. We have a lot of games left, but we just need to win games now." He praised their performance against Liverpool and stressed the importance of maintaining momentum.

Marcus Rashford is a player to watch for Aston Villa. Although he hasn't scored yet while on loan at Villa, Rashford has netted four goals in eight home Premier League appearances against Chelsea during his time with Manchester United. This season, he has scored seven goals across all competitions and started for Villa in their recent draw with Liverpool.

Chelsea's Cole Palmer is another key player who could make an impact. His last Premier League assist came against Aston Villa in December for Enzo Fernández's goal. Despite creating numerous chances since then, none have been converted by his teammates. Palmer has still managed 14 goals and six assists this season.

The upcoming match between Aston Villa and Chelsea is expected to be closely contested. Villa enters this game following a 2-2 draw with Liverpool, marking their fourth draw in five league matches. Meanwhile, Chelsea has struggled recently, winning only three of their last 11 matches across all competitions and remaining winless in five away league games.

Match Prediction

In terms of recent form, Chelsea has scored just two goals in their last five Premier League away matches (D2 L3), underperforming their expected goals by 4.8 (scoring two goals from an xG of 6.8). Historically, Villa has won only two of their last 11 home games against Chelsea (D2 L7), with victories coming in March 2014 and May 2021.

The Opta win probability suggests a tight contest: Aston Villa holds a 36.8% chance of winning, while Chelsea is slightly favoured at 38.3%. The probability of a draw stands at 24.9%, indicating that both teams have opportunities to secure points from this encounter.
