Chelsea have announced a heartfelt gesture following their victorious campaign in FIFA's newly-expanded Club World Cup held in July 2025.
After triumphing over Paris Saint-Germain with a convincing 3-0 win in the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the west London club earned a staggering $114.6 million (£84.4 million) in prize money. From this windfall, Chelsea set aside $15.5 million (£11.4 million) as a bonus pool to be equally distributed among the players who took part in the tournament under manager Enzo Maresca.

In a touching tribute, Chelsea and the players jointly decided to allocate an equal sum from this bonus fund to the family of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. The two brothers, footballers at Liverpool and Portuguese club Penafiel respectively, tragically died in a car accident in the Spanish province of Zamora on July 3, just ten days before Chelsea's sensational Club World Cup final victory. The donation to Jota's family is valued at around $500,000 before currency conversions, taxes, and other deductions.
Diogo Jota was a beloved figure in football, having scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool. The club has honored his memory extensively by unveiling plans for a memorial sculpture at Anfield, permanently retiring his No. 20 shirt, and wearing a 'Forever 20' emblem throughout the 2025-26 season.
The LFC Foundation is also launching a grassroots football program in his name. This profound mutual respect between Chelsea and the family of Jota highlights the football community's solidarity in the wake of the tragic loss.
The Blues will begin their Premier League campaign this season on Sunday (august 17) as they host fellow London club Crystal Palace at the Stamford Bridge.
