Chelsea: Two Areas Where the Blues Need to Improve in 2025, Including Over-Reliance on THIS Player

Chelsea are enjoying a promising season under Enzo Maresca, sitting second in the Premier League with 10 wins from 17 matches. With a clear tactical identity and a talented squad, the Stamford Bridge faithful have every reason to feel optimistic.

However, as the Blues look to transform themselves into title contenders and Champions League regulars, two key issues demand attention: error-prone defending and overreliance on Cole Palmer.

Chelsea Two Areas Where the Blues Need to Improve in 2025 Including Over-Reliance on THIS Player

Chelsea’s Error-Prone Defending

Defensive solidity has been a hallmark of Chelsea's identity for years, but this season, cracks have appeared. Despite strong performances in attack, the Blues have conceded 19 goals in 17 league games, often undermining their efforts with avoidable errors.

Goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, while capable of spectacular saves, has struggled with consistency. Poor marking on set pieces and lapses in concentration by defenders like Axel Disasi and Benoît Badiashile have repeatedly cost Chelsea valuable points.

The high defensive line deployed by Maresca to bolster Chelsea’s attacking threat has been a double-edged sword. Opponents have exploited the space left behind, particularly on counter-attacks. While the pairing of Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana shows promise, the absence of experienced backup options and the lack of cohesion in defensive transitions have made Chelsea vulnerable under pressure.

Injuries have compounded the issue, with key players like Reece James and Malo Gusto sidelined for significant periods. To address these concerns, Chelsea must prioritise defensive reinforcements, possibly targeting a seasoned centre-back and a reliable goalkeeper in upcoming transfer windows.

Over-Reliance on Cole Palmer

Cole Palmer’s rise has been one of Chelsea’s standout stories this season. With 11 goals in 17 appearances, the former Man City player has become the team’s talisman and a key creative force.

However, Chelsea’s overdependence on the 22-year-old has raised concerns. In matches where Palmer has been neutralised, such as the recent loss to Liverpool, the team has struggled to generate chances, registering a season-low two shots on target.

Statistically, Chelsea’s performance is starkly tied to Palmer’s output. The Blues average nearly two points per game when Palmer scores or assists, compared to less than one point per game when he doesn’t. Opposing teams have started to employ man-marking tactics to nullify Palmer, as seen with Curtis Jones’ diligent marking for Liverpool. This trend highlights the need for other attackers to shoulder more responsibility.

Encouragingly, players like Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke have stepped up in recent weeks. Jackson, Chelsea’s second-highest scorer with nine goals, is beginning to thrive as the focal point of the attack.

Similarly, Madueke’s contributions, including five goals, suggest a growing ability to influence games. For Chelsea to evolve, these players must continue their upward trajectory and relieve the creative burden on Palmer.

Chelsea have made undeniable progress under Maresca, but addressing these two areas is essential for sustained success. Strengthening the defence and diversifying their attacking threats will not only solidify their top-four credentials but also transform them into genuine title contenders. With the January window looming, the club has an opportunity to make strategic moves that could define the season’s trajectory.
