Chelsea urge fans to stop offensive song toward rivals Spurs

In recognition of Morata’s display, sections of the travelling support at the King Power Stadium were heard to sing: “Alvaro, oh, Alvaro, oh. He came from Real Madrid, he hates the f****** Yids.”

Bengaluru, September 11: Chelsea have approached the club's supporters to avoid singing an anti-Semitic song in tribute to record transfer, striker Alvaro Morata.

The club-record signing from Real Madrid is rapidly building up himself as a clique legend at his new destination as he scored the third consecutive goal of the season against Leicester in their 2-1 win on Saturday.

However, during the match, the offering he got from some Chelsea fans encapsulates itself in a melody which was targetted for rival opponents Tottenham, who broadly have a large Jewish fan base.

In recognition of Morata’s display, sections of the travelling support at the King Power Stadium were heard to sing: “Alvaro, oh, Alvaro, oh. He came from Real Madrid, he hates the f****** Yids.”

"Yid" is a disparaging term used to depict individuals of the Jewish belief. It was utilized to depict supporters of Chelsea's rivals Tottenham Hotspur, because of the perception that the north London club has vast Jewish followers.

Chelsea immediately urged the fans to stop such melody and A Chelsea statement issued after the victory read: “The club and the players appreciate the fans’ passionate support away from home but the language in that song is not acceptable at all.

“We have spoken to Alvaro after the game, he does not want to be connected with that song in any way. Both the club and the player request the supporters stop singing that song with immediate effect.”

Forward Morata also after the match claimed that he does not want to relate to such chanting by some Chelsea supporters, which contains a bigoted slur in reference to Premier League rivals Tottenham.

Morata tweeted after the game: "Since I arrived, I have been able to feel your support every single day, you are amazing and I'd like to ask you to please respect everyone!"
