Sonia Bompastor began her tenure as Chelsea's head coach with a victory over Aston Villa on Friday. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd's goal in the 36th minute secured the win at Kingsmeadow. Despite the triumph, Bompastor noted areas for improvement. Chelsea had four shots on target from 13 attempts, while Aston Villa managed five from the same number of shots and hit the woodwork twice.
Bompastor acknowledged Chelsea's struggles in front of goal but was satisfied with the team's overall performance in their Women's Super League (WSL) season opener. "In a high-level game, when you are not able to get the second goal, you just give more confidence to the opposition," she said. "Today, maybe we should've scored more goals, been more efficient and that would've changed the game for sure."

Chelsea ended with an expected goals (xG) total of 0.87 compared to Aston Villa's 0.97 and had less possession at 47.5%. Bompastor highlighted the need for efficiency in front of goal and adaptability during matches. "We had some great moments in the game," she stated, adding that there are still areas to work on despite being happy with securing three points.
Bompastor took over from Emma Hayes as Chelsea's head coach in May and aims to continue their WSL championship streak for a sixth consecutive season. Although early in her leadership, she sees potential for growth within her team. The match against Aston Villa underscored where Chelsea needs to adapt and improve.
Reflecting on the game, Bompastor mentioned that sometimes Chelsea didn't recognise where they should have played during certain scenarios. She noted that Aston Villa applied significant pressure, especially in the second half. "When the opposition is putting you under pressure, you have to be able to find maybe a more direct style of play beyond their backline," she explained.
Being smart and finding different styles of play is crucial when aiming for victory. Bompastor emphasised that playing short passes under pressure can be challenging, so adapting tactics is essential. Her focus remains on refining these strategies as Chelsea progresses through the season.
The victory marks a promising start for Bompastor's leadership at Chelsea. While challenges remain, her strategic insights aim to enhance team performance throughout this WSL season.
