Chelsea Women Complete Unbeaten Season: Sonia Bompastor Reflects On Historic Achievement

Chelsea Women secured an unbeaten season in the Women's Super League, achieving a record points total. Coach Sonia Bompastor reflects on the significance of this milestone.

Chelsea's Women's Super League season concluded with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Liverpool, thanks to Aggie Beever-Jones' last-minute goal. This win ensured Chelsea finished the season unbeaten, a first in WSL history. The team completed all 22 matches without a loss, amassing a record 60 points. This achievement marks an exceptional debut season for both Chelsea and their coach, Sonia Bompastor.

The triumph at Stamford Bridge was celebrated by players and fans alike, reflecting on Chelsea's outstanding campaign. Bompastor, accompanied by her four children, shared her thoughts on the special moment. "It was wonderful. I had goosebumps just because sometimes behind the scenes [my children] cry because you are travelling and not home," she said. "It can be difficult, but they understand your job, and it's even better when they can share these moments with you."

Bompastor Reflects on Chelsea's Unbeaten Season

Under Bompastor's leadership, Chelsea surpassed their previous record of 58 points set in the 2022-23 season. Saturday's victory against Liverpool elevated them to 60 points. Reflecting on this unbeaten run, Bompastor stated: "To be able to achieve that, for me, is more than the title." She admitted she hadn't considered it possible until they secured the WSL title with two games remaining.

Chelsea's sixth consecutive WSL title adds to their historic season. They became only the fourth English women's team to remain undefeated throughout a season. Previously, Chelsea achieved this feat in 2017-18 after 18 games and again in 2019-20 during a shortened season due to the pandemic. Manchester City (2016) and Arsenal (2012) also accomplished this in shorter seasons.

Chelsea's journey wasn't always smooth; they often won by narrow margins. Ten of their victories were by one goal, with crucial goals scored late in matches—17 of their total 56 goals came in the final 15 minutes, including eight during stoppage time. Bompastor remarked on their resilience: "We have been consistent even when sometimes performances were not the best - we always found a way to win and get the three points."

Bompastor highlighted a pivotal match against Arsenal in January as a turning point for realising their strong position in the league. Despite challenges in the latter half of the season where dominance waned slightly, Chelsea maintained consistency and remained unbeaten—a significant accomplishment given the league's competitiveness.

Bompastor reflected on whether Chelsea could be considered the greatest WSL team ever: "It's difficult to say that. For the club to be able to win six titles in a row means we have been consistent and every year we have managed to win trophies," she said. The unbeaten status adds uniqueness to this year's success.

This remarkable season leaves Chelsea poised for further glory as they aim for a domestic treble with an upcoming FA Cup final against Manchester United on May 18th.
