Chelsea Women Celebrate League Cup Triumph As Bompastor Praises Squad After Tough WSL Season

Chelsea Women clinched the League Cup with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United, marking Sonia Bompastor's sixth domestic final win. The win underscores Chelsea's depth amid a difficult WSL campaign and sets up further momentum for FA Cup and Champions League clashes this month.

Chelsea collected a fourth Women's League Cup crown with a 2-0 win over Manchester United at Ashton Gate, as Sonia Bompastor highlighted the squad's depth and resilience. Lauren James scored before half-time and Aggie Beever-Jones added another after the break, sealing a largely controlled performance from Chelsea.

Bompastor maintained a perfect personal run in domestic finals, extending that sequence to six victories as a manager. Her teams have shut out opponents in four of those matches, with three wins coming at OL Lyonnes and three at Chelsea. The latest triumph underlined Chelsea's consistent cup strength despite league difficulties.

Chelsea Women win League Cup under Bompastor

Chelsea's success against Manchester United has been sustained across competitions. The latest result means Chelsea have taken 14 wins from the last 16 meetings with United, drawing one and losing one. It was also Chelsea's third Women's League Cup victory over United, confirming a clear upper hand in this fixture.

That dominance sits in contrast to Chelsea's current Women's Super League campaign, where Manchester City lead the table. Chelsea trail City by 10 points, and the Opta supercomputer now gives Bompastor's side only a 1.8% chance of catching City. A league comeback therefore appears highly unlikely this season.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Bompastor stressed how demanding the domestic schedule has been and why this trophy felt earned. "A lot of happiness because it's always difficult to play in a final and win. Sometimes people just think because we are Chelsea, it's just a habit. But it takes a lot for my players to perform and grab a trophy. Really proud of my players. Every occasion, they just show up. I want to focus on players who are available, but if you look at the squad this season, it's been tough. We have had some big injuries, really important players who were not playing for us, but it just shows the quality we have in the squad."

Bompastor's defensive record in finals has drawn wider attention, with data highlighting Chelsea's structured approach. The victory over United again featured disciplined organisation without the ball. Chelsea limited clear chances while converting key moments through James and Beever-Jones, allowing the holders to manage the closing stages securely.

The win does not end Chelsea's pursuit of trophies. Chelsea remain active in the FA Cup, preparing for a quarter-final against Tottenham. European ambitions also continue, with WSL rivals Arsenal awaiting in the Champions League last eight. That schedule gives Bompastor more potential silverware targets despite league frustration.

Bompastor underlined the need to balance celebration with quick recovery, with another fixture close. "I just want the players to celebrate a little bit, but we are playing again on Wednesday [against Brighton], an important game," Bompastor said. "We are used to that and love to be in that position. I'm really pleased for my players, we have a big month with a lot of games, and this is the best start."

The match also added weight to analytical praise of Bompastor's work in domestic competitions, with her flawless finals record highlighted by statisticians.

The Women's League Cup success gives Chelsea momentum heading into a demanding spell across three competitions. While the league title appears beyond reach, the evidence from Ashton Gate, Bompastor's finals record and the remaining domestic and European fixtures show that Chelsea still have several realistic opportunities for further trophies this season.
