Chennaiyin FC Halts First-Team Operations as ISL Faces Uncertain Future

By MyKhel Staff

Chennaiyin FC have announced the suspension of all first-team activities, including player and staff operations, citing the ongoing turmoil surrounding the league's future.

In an official statement posted on social media, the club described the move as "difficult but necessary," pointing to the growing uncertainty within Indian football's top-tier competition. The announcement comes close on the heels of Bengaluru FC's recent decision to freeze first-team salaries, highlighting the financial and administrative concerns facing multiple ISL franchises.

At the center of the crisis is the impending expiration of the 15-year Master Rights Agreement between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), scheduled to lapse on December 8. However, the AIFF is currently restricted from negotiating a new deal or entering into fresh contracts until the Supreme Court gives its verdict on the draft constitution of the federation - a legal matter that has been dragging on without resolution.

This impasse has left clubs, sponsors, and stakeholders in a state of limbo, unable to plan for the upcoming season. Reports indicate that Chennaiyin FC, co-owned by Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan and entrepreneur Vita Dani, managed to disburse salaries up until June, but could not meet July obligations due to the drying up of financial support from FSDL. The commercial partner of the ISL had reportedly suspended payments after officially putting the 2025-26 season "on hold" in July.

Earlier this year, Chennaiyin FC had also ceased operations of its youth development programs, further underlining the strain caused by the league's instability. FSDL's suspension of the season was soon followed by an AIFF response that reaffirmed its intent to conduct the ISL as planned - but no concrete steps have since emerged.

With uncertainty mounting, a key meeting is set for August 7, where the AIFF will engage with CEOs of all ISL clubs to discuss urgent matters such as television rights, club sustainability, and the path forward for the next season.
