Chennaiyin FC vs Bengaluru FC, ISL 2024-25: Blues Beats Marina Machans in Six-Goal Thriller

By MyKhel Staff

Chennaiyin FC vs Bengaluru FC: Chennaiyin FC faced a tough defeat against Bengaluru FC in a high-scoring Indian Super League (ISL) clash at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The Marina Machans played with an all-Indian backline due to captain Ryan Edwards' absence.

They lost 4-2 in a match filled with drama and relentless action. Chennaiyin's head coach Owen Coyle fielded Laldinliana Renthlei, Bikash Yumnam, PC Laldinpuia, and Mandar Rao Dessai in defense. Connor Shields returned to the starting XI.

Whereas, Daniel Chima Chukwu and Irfan Yadwad led the attacking line. The game began energetically, with both goalkeepers making vital early saves. Bengaluru FC struck first in the 16th minute as Ryan Williams expertly volleyed home from close range.

Chennaiyin FC responded immediately when Lukas Brambilla's high press set up Irfan Yadwad for an easy tap-in. With momentum in their favor, the Marina Machans pushed Bengaluru's defense to its limits, but the visitors regained their lead in the 43rd minute.

The lead was to the credit of a perfectly placed Sunil Chhetri header. Undeterred, Chennaiyin equalized just before halftime. Lalrinliana Hnamte scored his first goal of the season, heading in Bikash Yumnam's long throw. The first half ended 2-2, showcasing both teams' determination.

In the second half, Chennaiyin goalkeeper Nawaz made critical saves, while Irfan Yadwad continued to threaten Bengaluru's goal. However, the visitors reclaimed the lead in the 68th minute when Ryan Williams struck his second goal of the night.

Bengaluru sealed their victory in the 82nd minute when an unfortunate own goal by Laldinliana Renthlei further widened the gap. Chennaiyin created late chances through Wilmar Jordan Gil and Kiyan Nassiri.

However, Bengaluru's defense held firm to secure the win. Despite this setback, Chennaiyin FC remain determined to turn things around. They will face Odisha FC at home on January 9, 2025, aiming for a strong start to the new year.
