By MyKhel Staff

Chennaiyin FC vs Punjab FC Match Result: Kalinga Super Cup 2024 Group C Round 1 ended with Chennaiyin FC holding Punjab FC to a 1-1 draw at the Kalinga Stadium main pitch in Bhubaneswar on Thursday (December 11).

In a match marred with a red card each for either side, Jordan Murray (82') scored the equaliser in the second half after Wilmar Jordan Gil put Punjab FC forward as early as the fourth minute of the game.

Punjab FC shot themselves in the foot before the end of the half when midfielder Amarjit Singh Kiyam was shown a red card for elbowing Ninthoi Meetei. It was also the first red card of the Kalinga Super Cup 2024. The referee initially gave him a yellow but changed it to a sent-off after consulting with the linesman. A vehement protest from the Punjab FC coaching staff also led to another red card for an unidentified official.

Playing with a man's advantage, Chennaiyin FC kept pushing for an equaliser but Owen Coyle wasn't putting enough man inside the box. Things only got tougher for them 7th minute onward when Rafael Crivellaro was given marching order as well for a second yellow of the night.

Gil's first goal for the team in the fourth minute gave Punjab FC a 1-0 lead and a solid start to the game. Madih Talal started the action that resulted in the goal. He got the ball, ran impressively towards the Punjab FC box, and then skillfully placed a cross that went over the Punjab FC defense.

Gil scored a wonderful goal as a result of timing his run into the area correctly and making a precise connection with the ball. This early goal caught Chennaiyin off guard because they were still getting a feel for the game.

Punjab FC looked effective in the first half with their strategy but Amarjit's sent off changed the complexion of the game. With just 10 players left, Punjab FC decided to take a more defensive stance in an effort to hold onto their lead.

Conversely, Chennaiyin gained fresh impetus and self-assurance and proceeded to generate several more opportunities. But their strikers, Connor Shields and Jordan Murray, were so wasteful that the score remained the same.

It was only after Murray's equaliser, the game entertained the crowd more as both teams continued to produce scoring opportunities in the game's closing minutes. However, both defenses remained resolute and uncompromising.

Kalinga Super Cup 2024 Group D Round 1 will begin tomorrow with FC Goa taking on Inter Kashi while defending champions and host Odisha FC will face Bengaluru FC.
