The Chinese football team will begin their AFC Asian Cup campaign in the second Group A game of the tournament as they face lower-ranked Tajikistan at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha on Saturday (January 13).
World No. 79 China, who are often considered a dark horse and have finished runners-up in 2004, will look for all three points against World No. 106 Tajikistan. Earlier on the opening day, defending champions Qatar defeated Lebanon 3-0 in the group.
In build-up to AFC Asian Cup, Chinese captain Wu Xi suffered a hamstring injury during the first 36 minutes of their New Year's Day friendly against Hong Kong. He was replaced by Wang Qiuming.
Jian Tao was the only player chosen for China in this competition without an international cap, Zhang Linpeng moved above the century mark for the national team versus Hong Kong, collecting his 101st appearance, while Zhang Yuning made his 25th appearance earlier this year, replacing Tan Long, who notched their only goal of that encounter.
Wu Lei is seven goals behind Hao Haidong for the most goals ever with the national team, with the seasoned Shanghai Port striker now in second place at 32. Wu Lei needs nine more caps to achieve 100.
Even though they have a young team, all of the Tajikistani players selected for this tournament have earned at least one senior cap. The two least experienced players are Alisher Shukurov and Mukhriddin Khasanov, who each have one cap and made his debut in the team's previous match against Hong Kong (which they won 2-1).
They have four appearances left before Ehson Panjshanbe reaches 50, two more for Mukhammadzhon Rakhimov to achieve that mark, and their most-capped senior player is Akhtam Nazarov (77).
Captain Parvizdzhon Umarbayev can move into a tie for fifth in all-time goals for his country alongside Fatkhullo Fatkhuloev, with the CSKA 1948 midfielder currently on nine, while Rustam Soirov and Shashrom Samiev found the back of the net in their triumph versus Hong Kong.
