Rangers' manager Philippe Clement clarified that James Tavernier was left out of the starting lineup against Olympiacos to manage his workload. Tavernier, aged 33, came on as a substitute in the second half. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Cyriel Dessers equalising after Ayoub El Kaabi's goal. Despite some criticism of Tavernier this season, Clement emphasised the importance of managing the captain's playing time.
In comments reported by BBC Sport, Clement stated: "That's never an easy decision, but I want more than one captain in the group. If you come at a certain age you can't play 60 games at the same level. We knew that before the season. It's about competition for spots. It's about one team, winning together. That's Rangers - one team, one family, going for one goal."
Clement expressed mixed feelings after the match, acknowledging a strong team performance but lamenting not securing a win. He praised his players for their discipline and adherence to strategy but stressed the need to aim for victories consistently. "A very strong performance as a team, sticking to the plan, being very disciplined and using the spaces," he added.Rangers have accumulated seven points from four matches in this European campaign. They are positioned just outside the top eight in their group standings. Despite this solid showing, Clement remains focused on improving results further. The draw against Olympiacos extended Rangers' unbeaten run in away Europa League matches to five games (two wins and three draws). This equals their longest unbeaten streak in the competition's history, previously achieved between October 2020 and March 2021.Looking ahead, Rangers will face Nice from Ligue 1 next in their Europa League journey. Nice recently played out a 2-2 draw with Enschede on Thursday.Clement also highlighted his satisfaction with various aspects of his team's play during the match against Olympiacos. He noted that Jack Butland had little work to do due to solid defensive efforts and praised the midfield's significant contribution.

"Disappointed we didn't win the game; that's the next step we need to take," Clement remarked. "But I saw a lot of positive things and I need to praise the whole team for that."
Clement is determined to instil a winning mentality within his squad, urging them not to settle for draws when victory is possible. His focus remains on fostering a competitive spirit among players while ensuring they work cohesively towards common goals on and off the field.
