Club Brugge Takes Narrow 2-1 Lead Against Atalanta After Gustaf Nilsson's Late Penalty

In a thrilling match, Club Brugge edged Atalanta 2-1 thanks to Gustaf Nilsson's stoppage-time penalty. The result sets up an exciting second leg in Bergamo.

Gustaf Nilsson's late penalty secured a narrow 2-1 victory for Club Brugge against Atalanta in the first leg of their Champions League knockout playoff. The penalty, awarded after Isak Hien's challenge on Nilsson, was confirmed by VAR despite minimal contact. Nilsson converted the spot-kick in the 94th minute, giving Brugge an edge in the tie.

Club Brugge began strongly at Jan Breydelstadion, taking the lead in the 15th minute. Ferran Jutgla expertly controlled Chemsdine Talbi's cross before volleying past Atalanta's goalkeeper Rui Patricio. However, Atalanta equalised just before halftime when Mario Pasalic headed home Davide Zappacosta's cross.

Nilsson's Late Penalty Gives Brugge Advantage

The match seemed destined for a draw until Nilsson's decisive penalty altered the outcome. After a lengthy delay, he calmly sent Patricio the wrong way to secure Brugge's advantage ahead of next week's second leg in Bergamo.

This victory marked Club Brugge's first win over an Italian team in major European competitions since defeating AC Milan in October 2003. Nilsson became a hero by scoring the Champions League's first 90th-minute winning penalty since Eric Choupo-Moting did so for Schalke against Sporting CP in October 2014.

Atalanta's Unbeaten Run Ends

Atalanta experienced their first loss in 15 European away games but remain competitive due to Pasalic’s equaliser. Pasalic became the first Croatian to score in three consecutive Champions League matches since Andrej Kramaric in December 2018. He now shares La Dea’s record for most direct goal involvements (12) with Duvan Zapata.

The match also highlighted Rui Patricio’s return to Champions League knockout stages after nearly 16 years. His previous appearance was with Sporting against Bayern Munich in March 2009. Only Scott Carson and Oleksandr Shovkovskiy have had longer gaps between such appearances.

The upcoming second leg promises excitement as both teams aim to progress further in this prestigious competition.
