Club Brugge 4-1 Kairat Almaty Keeps Champions League Knockout Hopes Alive

Club Brugge kept the Champions League campaign on track with a 4-1 win over Kairat Almaty at Astana Arena, ending a run of four straight away defeats in the competition and staying in contention to finish inside the top 24 of the league stage.

The visitors controlled most attacking numbers against the Kazakh side, generating 2.23 expected goals from 17 attempts, while Kairat produced 0.25 xG from eight shots, reflecting Brugge’s superiority as the scoreline stretched during the second half in Kazakhstan.

Aleksandar Stankovic finally broke Kairat’s resistance shortly after the half-hour mark. Temirlan Anarbekov failed to deal cleanly with a cross, punching weakly into traffic. The loose ball fell for Stankovic, who drove a powerful finish into the net to open the scoring for the Belgian side.

Before that breakthrough, Brugge already threatened in the 18th minute. Mamadou Diakhon cut inside and curled a left-footed shot against the inside of the far post. The ball bounced away from danger, denying Diakhon, who remained heavily involved throughout the match in wide attacking areas.

The advantage doubled before half-time through captain Hans Vanaken. Joaquin Seys headed the ball back across goal, and Vanaken reacted quickly, turning the ball in off a shin from close range. Vanaken later delivered a lofted pass that Brandon Mechele guided beyond Anarbekov in the 84th minute.

Romeo Vermant scored Brugge’s third after the interval. Diakhon drilled a low cross along the face of goal, which took a slight deflection yet still reached Vermant, who finished into an open net. Earlier, Carlos Forbs twice went close, with one effort saved by Anarbekov and another clearing the bar.

Kairat finally found a response deep into stoppage time. In the second added minute, Adilet Sadybekov controlled the ball superbly, set up a volley for himself and struck from distance into the bottom-left corner, securing a late consolation that denied Brugge a clean sheet in Kazakhstan.

Diakhon’s influence stretched far beyond the unlucky assist attempt. Diakhon created two chances, completed four of six dribbles, won seven of 13 duels, drew three fouls and regained possession twice, producing an all-round display that underpinned Brugge’s first Champions League away success since the 1992-93 streak of four defeats.
