Formerly a forward with Nantes and Paris St-Germain, Vahid Halilhodzic represented the Yugoslavian national team in two matches at the 1982 World Cup. Algeria are the second team that the Bosnian tactician has taken to the World Cup, although he was sacked as coach of Ivory Coast after securing their qualification four years ago. In previous editions Algeria had only ever been led by native coaches.

The Italian tactician is appearing in his second successive World Cup as coach of a foreign team, having already managed England at the 2010 finals.
