Cole Palmer Surpasses Gianfranco Zola And Aims For Chelsea Greatness With Title Victory

Cole Palmer has outperformed Gianfranco Zola at Chelsea and could secure his legacy by leading the team to a Premier League title. With an impressive record of penalty success and goal involvements, he is poised to become one of the club's all-time greats.

Cole Palmer has already outshone Gianfranco Zola's achievements with Chelsea, potentially etching his name in the club's history if he leads them to a Premier League title. Jamie Carragher shared this sentiment after Palmer's two penalties contributed to a thrilling 4-3 comeback win over Tottenham. Palmer has now scored all 12 of his penalty attempts in the Premier League, surpassing Yaya Toure's record of 11 for Manchester City.

Palmer's impressive record includes 50 goal involvements, comprising 33 goals and 17 assists, in just 48 Premier League matches for Chelsea. Only three players have achieved this feat in fewer games: Erling Haaland for Manchester City (39), Andy Cole for Newcastle United (43), and Mohamed Salah for Liverpool (46). Carragher believes Palmer has already cemented his status at Chelsea, with more success potentially on the horizon.

Palmer Surpasses Zola in Chelsea History

Reflecting on Chelsea's iconic players like Gianfranco Zola and Eden Hazard, Carragher remarked on Sky Sports that Palmer has accomplished more in 18 months than Zola did. He stated, "When you think of Chelsea's flair players like Gianfranco Zola and Eden Hazard, I think Palmer has done more in 18 months than Zola did, and Zola is one of Chelsea's greatest ever players." Carragher added that if Palmer continues his current form and leads Chelsea to a title, he could be considered one of their greatest players.

Maresca’s young squad is currently four points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool. Liverpool’s match against Everton was postponed due to bad weather. Meanwhile, Chelsea staged an impressive comeback from a 2-0 deficit at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Enzo Fernandez and Jadon Sancho also scored alongside Palmer’s penalties, showcasing the depth of talent available to Maresca.

Despite their early success, Carragher dismisses any notion of Chelsea being an underdog story. He commented that this team is not a Cinderella tale but rather a club that has invested £1.2 billion. "This Chelsea team is no underdog story," Carragher said. "This is a team that has spent £1.2 billion, but what they're doing this season is something totally unexpected." He emphasized that they are serious contenders for the title this season.

The stormy atmosphere at Tottenham contrasted with the postponed Liverpool match due to weather issues. However, it highlighted Chelsea’s resilience as they turned around a challenging situation into victory. The combination of experienced players like Enzo Fernandez and emerging talents such as Jadon Sancho underscores Maresca’s strategic depth.

Palmer’s consistent performance from penalties sets him apart in Premier League history. His ability to score under pressure adds significant value to Chelsea’s campaign this season. As the competition progresses, both fans and analysts will watch closely to see if Palmer can guide his team to further glory.
