Sergio Conceicao Discusses AC Milan's Coppa Italia Final Loss And Future Challenges

Sergio Conceicao reflects on AC Milan's disappointing Coppa Italia final defeat to Bologna, highlighting the team's struggles this season and the need for improvement.

Sergio Conceicao expressed that AC Milan's recent Coppa Italia final loss to Bologna mirrored their ongoing challenges this season. Milan was defeated 1-0 in Rome on Wednesday, with Dan Ndoye scoring the decisive goal in the second half. This marked Milan's sixth loss in their last seven Coppa Italia finals, with their sole victory occurring in the 2002-03 season.

The defeat capped a largely disappointing season for Milan, despite winning the Supercoppa Italiana in January. Currently, they sit eighth in Serie A with 60 points, trailing Juventus by four points and having only two matches left. "It was a hard-fought match," Conceicao told Sport Mediaset. "I am disappointed in losing a final and the opportunity to win silverware, in a difficult season with a very difficult environment."

Conceicao on AC Milan's Coppa Italia Loss

Milan had previously beaten Bologna 3-1 in Serie A just last Friday. Santiago Gimenez and Christian Pulisic led a late comeback to secure that victory, marking Milan's fourth consecutive win across all competitions. In contrast, Vincenzo Italiano's side suffered their third straight defeat.

During Friday's match, Milan made ten attempts on goal, five of which were on target, achieving an expected goals (xG) value of 1.7. However, on Wednesday, they managed only seven shots and tested Lukasz Skorupski twice with an xG of 1.5. Conceicao admitted he couldn't pinpoint why performances varied so much between these games.

"There are 10,000 things going through your mind in these situations," Conceicao remarked about the differing performances. "At the end of the day, everyone is a great coach in hindsight." He stood by his pre-match decisions and stated he would make the same choices again if given another chance.

Despite early success with Milan by winning the Supercoppa Italiana shortly after joining, Conceicao now faces mounting pressure due to recent results. When questioned about his future at the club during a press conference, he avoided giving a direct answer.

Looking Ahead

"The cup is lost; there's nothing else to do but look forward with dignity," Conceicao commented regarding future plans. He mentioned needing time to reflect on what went wrong and what could have been improved upon during the season.

Conceicao acknowledged Bologna's strong performance and admitted that Milan lacked something crucial during the final match. His focus remains on understanding past mistakes while preparing for upcoming challenges as they aim to finish their Serie A campaign strongly.
