Antonio Conte Encourages Napoli Players To Embrace Serie A Title Challenge Ahead Of Key Match

Antonio Conte has encouraged his Napoli squad to embrace the excitement of the Serie A title race as they prepare for a crucial match against league leaders Inter on Saturday. Napoli currently holds second place, trailing Simone Inzaghi's team by just one point in their pursuit to defend the Scudetto they claimed in the 2022-23 season.

Despite their strong position, Napoli's recent form has been concerning. They have not secured a win in their last four league games, with three draws and one loss. Conte is determined to reverse this trend, as his teams have never gone five Serie A matches without a victory under his management.

Their recent defeat to Como marked a potential turning point, as Napoli could face consecutive losses for the first time since December 2023. According to Opta's simulations, Napoli has a 24.2% chance of winning the Scudetto, compared to Inter's 68%, while Atalanta stands at 7.1%. Despite these odds, Conte remains confident in his team's ability to reclaim the title.

Conte expressed his belief that his players possess the necessary qualities to win the Scudetto. "Beyond the standings, I would have expected a Napoli that, after seven months, would start taking shape," he stated. He emphasized that their current position should instill pride rather than pressure.

The upcoming match at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona promises excitement due to both teams' performances this season. Since 2020, Napoli has only managed one victory against Inter in Serie A (D4 L6), losing six times during this period—more than against any other team.

Both Napoli and Inter have excelled in scoring from high turnovers this season, each netting six goals through such plays. However, Conte will be without midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa for this match.

Midfield Dilemma

When asked about Anguissa's replacement, Conte said: "Good question, I've been carrying it with me all week." He mentioned considering Billy Gilmour or Philip Billing as potential substitutes but had yet to decide. "We will try to make the best choice by evaluating the players and always looking for a solution to injuries," he added.

Conte also confirmed that left-backs Mathias Olivera and Leonardo Spinazzola are fit for selection against Inter. Spinazzola played fully against Como and was carefully managed during training sessions. Olivera had been dealing with a recurring calf injury but is now working towards full fitness.

"We've recovered them," Conte noted about Olivera and Spinazzola's availability. "Mathias had a more serious issue... He's working to be in top shape." The decision on who will play remains open until closer evaluation before kickoff.
