Lampard Chelsea Links: Coventry City Chairman Insists Fans Should Not Worry

Chelsea’s search for a new head coach has placed Frank Lampard back in the headlines, yet Coventry City chairman Doug King insists supporters should stay calm, despite rumours suggesting Lampard could return to Stamford Bridge after guiding Coventry back to the Premier League.

Liam Rosenior was dismissed by Chelsea on Wednesday after five straight league defeats without a goal, driving speculation over Lampard’s future. King told BBC CWR that Coventry City expect no immediate change, stressing that Lampard’s work at the club remains the key focus.

Lampard Chelsea Links: Coventry Chair Unfazed

Lampard took charge at Coventry City in November 2024 and has since overseen a major upturn. Coventry won the Championship title with a 5-1 victory over Portsmouth on Tuesday, earning promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years.

Last season, Coventry City fell short in the play-off semi-finals under Lampard, but this campaign delivered the step they needed. King highlighted how the squad responded over those 18 months, building a consistent challenge in a demanding division without the aid of parachute payments.

Lampard’s figures with Coventry City in the Championship underline the improvement. Lampard has won 42 of 73 league matches with the Sky Blues, giving a 57.5% win rate and an average of 1.93 points per game across those fixtures, following the club’s promotion push.

Team Competition Games Wins Draws Losses Win % Points per game
Coventry City Championship 73 42 - - 57.5 1.93
Chelsea Premier League 66 29 13 24 - -

Lampard previously managed Chelsea in the Premier League across two spells, including one interim period. In the top-flight with Chelsea, Lampard won 29 of 66 league matches, drawing 13 and losing 24, figures that now contrast with Lampard’s current Championship record.

King underlined Lampard’s importance to Coventry City’s recent journey. "He's done a fantastic job, it's been an incredible 18 months for us and for him," King said about Lampard. The message to Coventry supporters is that Lampard’s achievements with the squad are central.

King described Lampard’s mindset following promotion. "I am sure he's in reflective mode. I said to him 'do not underestimate how difficult what you've just achieved is to do'." King pointed to the scale of winning the league given Coventry City’s financial position.

King added: "He's done huge things in his playing career but to get out of this league as champions without a parachute payment, from where we've come from, is a huge achievement nobody can take away from him." That view reflects Coventry City’s long road back.

King also commented on constant speculation across the game. "Everybody is going to get linked with everything, it's a merry-go-round." King noted the turnover in dugouts. "It's a bit disappointing clubs are appointing three or four managers a season."

King explained Coventry City’s stance on stability. "We don't want to be in those positions, that means something has gone a little bit astray." Looking at Lampard’s situation, King said: "I just think he's happy, I'm happy, everybody's happy, we've just got smiles on our faces and we don't worry about what may or may not happen for the head coach."
