Haji Wright hit a hat-trick as Coventry City beat Middlesbrough 3-1 and moved back to the top of the Championship. The result arrived seven days after Coventry City had surrendered a long-standing lead to the same opponents, yet Frank Lampard’s side responded with control, intensity and more composure in the key moments.
Wright struck first on 21 minutes, guiding in a first-time effort from Jack Rudoni’s precise cross, then added a second early in the second half from Carl Rushworth’s long kick. Middlesbrough replied through Riley McGree on 67 minutes, before Wright converted a late penalty awarded for a Matt Targett handball.

Wright’s display placed the United States forward in exclusive company at this level. The striker became only the fourth player, after Ricardo Fuller in December 2007 v West Brom, Leroy Lita in October 2008 v Wolves and Kieffer Moore in October 2025 v Coventry, to score a hat-trick against the Championship leaders.
That treble not only restored Coventry City to first place, it also halted a three-match winless league sequence. The Opta supercomputer now gives Coventry City a 43.5% chance of winning the title, with Middlesbrough assigned a 38.6% probability, underlining how tight the race remains despite this decisive result.
Lampard praised the discipline and work ethic shown, especially without the ball against high-quality opponents. "We can't over-celebrate though, it's just a moment. It's the Championship and it's onto the next one," Lampard said. "It was a massive performance from the lads. What a high-class opposition as well, by the way. Good football team, that's why they've done what they've done recently. But the performance, the effort, the tactical way we played off the ball, we worked all week off the ball. Really delighted with the result. It's a big one tonight."
Rushworth, who assisted Wright’s second with a direct clearance, highlighted how collective intensity underpinned Coventry City’s display from the opening whistle. "I am really happy that this guy [Haji Wright] has helped me out today. As Haji said, it was a whole team performance. It was unbelievable from minute one," Rushworth said. "We had the backing of the CBS and the roar they had from every tackle, every time we won the ball, it was unbelievable, and I'm glad we got the win to get us back on track. It's a big statement win. Like the gaffer always says, we can't get too high on this, and we go onto the next game. I'm really pleased for the lads."
The scoreline reflected clinical finishing rather than constant dominance, as Coventry City were pushed throughout. The hosts generated nine shots for an expected goals value of 1.79, while Middlesbrough recorded 17 attempts and an xG of 1.17, indicating the visitors created volume but lacked sharpness in decisive situations.

Middlesbrough’s defeat ended a six-game winning streak in the Championship and denied the chance of seven straight league victories for the first time since May 1987. Michael Carrick’s team still carved out major openings, with Morgan Whittaker heading over unmarked soon after the interval and Jeremy Sarmiento later striking the inside of the post.
Defender Luke Ayling accepted Middlesbrough did not reach recent standards during the key spells that shaped the contest. "Just moments in the game when we weren't good enough, and I think in the first half we weren't as good as what we havebeen recently," he said. "Poor on the ball and we kind of got their crowd into the game which they wanted. They're a very good team. They might have been on a bad run, but we know what a good team they are and we kind of played into their hands in the first half. Then we started the second half well. We had a big chance with Morgs [Whittaker], then they went 2-0 up, we bounced straight back, then another big moment straight after."
The result left Coventry City back on top of the Championship and restored confidence after a difficult spell, while Middlesbrough departed knowing they remained firmly in the title race. With both sides still favoured strongly by prediction models, their battle for first place is likely to stay intense deep into the season.
