Coventry City Players 'Did Not Deserve' Dramatic Play-off Defeat Against Sunderland

Frank Lampard expressed pride in Coventry City's performance despite their Championship play-off defeat to Sunderland. The Sky Blues dominated the match but fell short in the final moments.

Frank Lampard expressed his belief that Coventry City outperformed Sunderland in their Championship play-off semi-final, despite being eliminated. After a 2-1 home loss in the first leg, Coventry equalised the tie with Ephron Mason-Clark's goal in the 76th minute at the Stadium of Light. However, Dan Ballard's header from Enzo Le Fee's corner in the 122nd minute secured Sunderland's spot in the final against Sheffield United on May 24.

Coventry City had a higher expected goals (xG) total of 3.33 from 34 shots compared to Sunderland's 2.52 xG from 30 attempts over both legs. Lampard praised his players' performance and resilience, stating, "Firstly, congratulations to Sunderland, they go to the final but immense pride I've got in my players." He highlighted Coventry's dominance and control during significant periods of both matches.

Coventry City Faces Heartbreaking Play-off Loss

Dan Ballard emerged as a key player for Sunderland, helping them move closer to ending their Premier League absence since the 2016-17 season. Despite injuries throughout the season, Ballard returned to action on the final day and excelled with team-high stats for clearances (19), aerial duels won (six), and touches (95). His performance was crucial in securing Sunderland's victory.

Ballard expressed gratitude towards manager Regis Le Bris for trusting him over Chris Mepham. "I was so nervous going into that first game," Ballard said. "He [Regis Le Bris] has left Chris Mepham out who has been our best player all season." The decision paid off as Ballard played a pivotal role in Sunderland's success.

Lampard reflected on his team's journey from being 17th in December to reaching the play-offs. He acknowledged their hard work and improvement throughout the second half of the season. Despite not advancing, Lampard remained proud of his players' efforts and maintained a balanced perspective due to his experience.

"I'm a lot older and I've been around a lot so I've taken whacks and I've had success," Lampard noted. He emphasised that while they were not bitter about the outcome, Coventry deserved more based on their performances across both legs.

Le Bris Celebrates Dramatic Win

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris celebrated his team's dramatic win with visible emotion at full-time. "It's really fantastic because this scenario was absolutely incredible," he remarked. Although nervous initially, Sunderland improved significantly during extra-time, playing their style of football effectively.

Le Bris acknowledged some frustration with their early performance but was ultimately pleased with how they executed their game plan when it mattered most. The victory marked an important step for Sunderland as they aim for promotion back to the Premier League.

Lampard is no stranger to play-off disappointment; he previously led Derby County to the 2018-19 play-off final but lost to Aston Villa. Despite this setback with Coventry City, he remains optimistic about their future prospects and is determined to regroup for another campaign in pursuit of promotion.
