Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has shed light on Cristiano Ronaldo's big belief in the transformation of right-back Diogo Dalot from a struggling newcomer to a key player at Old Trafford.

Diogo Dalot's journey at Manchester United began in June 2018 when he arrived from Porto for a fee of £19 million. However, the Portuguese defender initially found it challenging to secure a regular spot in the starting lineup.

Despite his talent, doubts lingered about his abilities, with even former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand expressing skepticism about his quality. Yet, amidst the uncertainty, a beacon of support emerged in the form of Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo, known for his leadership and mentorship qualities, consistently encouraged Ferdinand to be patient with Dalot, believing in the young defender's potential.

In a recent interview, Rio Ferdinand shed light on Ronaldo's unwavering belief in Dalot's abilities, revealing how the Portuguese superstar's encouragement played a pivotal role in the defender's resurgence. Now, Dalot's potential is being recognised, as he emerges as one of the standout performers during United's recent run of form.

"Dalot needs a special mention,’ Ferdinand said on his podcast. "He is someone I doubted early-on. I remember speaking to Cristiano Ronaldo and said, 'Is he really that good?’ – and Cristiano said he will work hard, make himself better and 100 per cent improve."

Dalot's fortunes took a decisive turn following a successful loan spell at Serie A giants AC Milan. Upon his return to Manchester United, he quickly asserted himself as a key component in Erik ten Hag's plans, showcasing newfound confidence and maturity on the pitch.
