Cristiano Ronaldo Manifested a Penalty Kick against Croatia? Portugal Star Reveals after Victory

Portugal advanced to the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Croatia in Toronto, and Cristiano Ronaldo played a central part in it.

The match was marked by high tension, a late comeback, and a crucial contribution from Cristiano Ronaldo. Croatia took the lead in the 53rd minute when Ivan Perišić fired a low strike across the goal.

Portugal responded with increased urgency, dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities. The turning point arrived in the 68th minute when Renato Veiga was fouled inside the penalty area. Ronaldo stepped forward and converted the spot-kick with characteristic composure, equalising the score at 1-1, as was his first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match.

Manager Roberto Martínez substituted Ronaldo late in regular time to introduce fresh legs. The decision proved inspired. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Gonçalo Ramos rose highest to head home Rafael Leão's pinpoint cross, securing a dramatic 2-1 win. VAR later disallowed a Croatia equaliser for offside, confirming Portugal's passage amid heated protests.

Ronaldo's performance combined leadership and mental resilience. Though no longer at peak athletic explosiveness, his intelligent movement created space for teammates and his clinical penalty showcased enduring quality under pressure.

"In the afternoon, I had a feeling the match would be decided by a penalty," Ronaldo said afterwards.

"We had been prepared for that since earlier in the day because I felt it was going to happen. My heart was racing, but I tried to trust what I was feeling, rely on my instincts, and believe that I was going to score. That's what I've always believed," he added.

The victory carries added emotional weight, coming on the anniversary of Diogo Jota's tragic passing. Portugal now prepare for a challenging round-of-16 encounter against Spain as they aim to get closer to their maiden World Cup title.
