Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are widely regarded as the greatest footballers of all time, sparking endless debates among fans and pundits.

Their immense popularity not only outshines ordinary fans but also draws admiration from some of the biggest names in world football. Nearly every football icon has voiced a preference between the Argentine and Portuguese legends.

Liverpool and England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is the latest one to comment on the matter. The 25-year-old has faced both Messi and Ronaldo on the pitch, giving him a strong stand on their greatness.

In an exclusive interview with The Mirror, Alexander-Arnold was asked about his toughest opponent. Without hesitation, he named Lionel Messi, praising the former Barcelona and PSG star with direct admiration.

Alexander-Arnold has only faced Messi once, during Liverpool's historic Champions League semi-final comeback at Anfield, where he famously assisted Divock Origi.

But it seems despite the brief encounters, the Inter Miami star has left a lasting impression on the Liverpool vice-captain.

"It has to be Messi for me, the best player I've played, for me the best player that's ever played the game," Alexander-Arnold told The Mirror.

"I never watched Maradona. To imagine anyone better than what I've been able to see [from Messi], my brain doesn't comprehend it. There's no way anyone can be better than him.

"For me, I think in many, many aspects of the game he's probably the best at any given moment. He can almost do what he wants on a football pitch, so yeah, for that reason he's the best," He added.

Alexander-Arnold's strong outlook has ignited discussions on social media, with supporters and critics alike mulling over his comments.

However given Messi's accolades over the last two decades, including numerous Ballon d'Or awards and a record-breaking trophy-laden club and country career, it is difficult to debate over Alexander-Arnold's choice.
