Cristiano Ronaldo Suspended as Portuguese Federation Opens Disciplinary Probe
Lisbon, October 10: Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), which has also launched disciplinary proceedings against the veteran forward following his departure from the national team camp during the international break.
The federation confirmed on Saturday that the matter had been referred to its disciplinary investigation committee. In a statement, the FPF said the findings would remain confidential until the investigation was completed.

The 41-year-old reportedly left the camp following a disagreement with new coach Jorge Jesus over his limited playing time. Ronaldo was frustrated after being asked to warm up on the sidelines but not being brought onto the pitch against Norway.
Portugal, however, continued to deliver positive results during his absence. The team won all three matches in which Ronaldo was either left out of the squad or remained an unused substitute. His replacement, Gonçalo Ramos, capitalised on the opportunity by scoring three goals.
Ronaldo later addressed the situation in a lengthy social media post shared with his 679 million Instagram followers. He acknowledged that he expected disciplinary action under the federation's rules but also expressed his desire to play one or more farewell matches for Portugal.
"I have already apologised, but I know that actions must have consequences," Ronaldo wrote. "Anyone in football, as I am, knows that, regardless of each person's status, the rules are the same for everyone."
The forward also called on Jesus to recognise the error in asking him to warm up without eventually introducing him during the Norway fixture. The coach, however, did not publicly acknowledge any wrongdoing.
The disciplinary case could have serious implications for Ronaldo. According to the Portuguese federation's regulations, a player who abandons or fails to attend a national team training session, match or official activity without a valid justification can face a suspension ranging from one to six months, alongside a financial penalty.
Although Ronaldo reportedly informed the federation of his decision to leave the camp, it remains unclear whether the circumstances will be accepted as sufficient justification under the rules.
The investigation committee will determine whether the forward breached the regulations and what punishment, if any, should follow. The federation has yet to announce a final decision.
Ronaldo's comments suggest he understands that his status as Portugal's most prominent player will not necessarily shield him from disciplinary consequences as the matter moves forward.
