Croatia secured a 2-0 victory against France in the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final, thanks to Ivan Perisic's outstanding performance. Perisic, earning his 141st cap, assisted Ante Budimir's opening goal and scored his 34th international goal with a superb finish. This win gives Croatia a strong advantage going into the second leg.
In the eighth minute, Croatia had an opportunity to take the lead when Ibrahima Konate handled the ball in the box. The decision was confirmed by VAR, resulting in a penalty. Andrej Kramaric stepped up but his weak shot was saved by Mike Maignan, who delayed the penalty's execution. Despite this setback, Croatia soon found themselves ahead.

Perisic delivered a precise cross that Budimir headed towards goal. Although Maignan got a hand to it, the ball deflected off the post and into the net. Just before halftime, Croatia appealed for another penalty when Budimir fell under William Saliba's challenge, but it was dismissed. However, Perisic doubled Croatia's lead with a half-volley after Martin Baturina's blocked shot.
France showed improvement after halftime. Kylian Mbappe sent a sharp pass to Ousmane Dembele in the box, but Dembele hit the side netting. Dembele remained France's most dangerous player, forcing Dominik Livakovic into action with a volley and narrowly missing with another attempt.
Livakovic was kept busy as France increased their pressure in the second half. He made crucial saves, including stopping Mbappe’s curling shot from finding its target. Despite their efforts, Didier Deschamps' team couldn't convert their chances into goals. They now face an uphill task in the return leg at Stade de France this Sunday.
This match marked Croatia’s consecutive victories over France for the first time ever. Their previous encounter ended in a 1-0 win for Croatia during the 2022 Nations League edition. Perisic became notable as he matched Wayne Rooney’s feat from November 2015 by scoring and assisting against France in one game.
Although France had a higher expected goals (xG) total of 1.56 compared to Croatia’s 1.43, they struggled with accuracy. Out of 17 attempts, only six were on target. Substitute Bradley Barcola missed what Opta defined as their only 'big' chance of the match.
The Croatian team demonstrated resilience and tactical discipline under Zlatko Dalic’s guidance to achieve this historic back-to-back win against Les Bleus.
