Crystal Palace Achieves Historic Victory With Nine Players Against Brighton In Premier League

Crystal Palace made Premier League history by winning against Brighton with only nine players. Goals from Mateta and Munoz secured a thrilling 2-1 victory despite two red cards.

Crystal Palace made history in the Premier League by securing a 2-1 victory over Brighton, despite being reduced to nine players. This remarkable win at Selhurst Park marked the first time a team has won after receiving two red cards. Jean-Philippe Mateta and Daniel Munoz scored for Palace, while Danny Welbeck netted for Brighton.

In the 78th minute, Eddie Nketiah was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a reckless tackle. Marc Guehi followed with another red card in the 90th minute. Despite these setbacks, Palace managed to hold on through nearly 14 minutes of stoppage time. Brighton's Jan Paul van Hecke also received a red card, which helped Palace's cause.

Palace Wins Historic Match with Nine Players

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson praised his team's resilience, saying, "It was phenomenal. The lads were in the trenches at the end." He highlighted how they had to adapt quickly and defend fiercely with fewer players on the field. "No one knew what positions they were playing, but they were throwing bodies in the way of shots," he added.

The victory lifted Oliver Glasner's team to 11th place in the league standings. It also marked their first league double over Brighton since the 1932-33 season. Glasner expressed his delight: "It's a huge win for us. This win is for our fans." He acknowledged the emotional rollercoaster of managing such an intense match.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler reflected on his team's performance, lamenting Van Hecke's late mistake that reduced their numerical advantage. "It was very wild," he said, noting their inability to control the game towards the end. Hurzeler admitted that Crystal Palace showed more hunger and aggression.

This match was notable as it was the first Premier League game since April 2013 to feature three red cards. In that previous instance, Southampton had two players sent off against West Brom, who also had one player dismissed.

Glasner noted how challenging it was to manage such an unpredictable game: "There was 12 minutes additional time, then you see 103 minutes, and you think 'come on, how long do we play?'" Despite this, he credited his team's training and determination for their ability to secure victory under difficult circumstances.

The match showcased Crystal Palace's determination and adaptability under pressure. Their ability to maintain composure and secure a win despite being down two players is commendable. This victory not only boosts their position in the league but also strengthens their bond with fans who cherish this derby rivalry.
