Crystal Palace Win Conference League As Mateta Scores In Glasner Farewell

Crystal Palace closed the Oliver Glasner era with a historic night, defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the Conference League final in Leipzig. Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the only goal, delivering the club’s first European trophy. The victory comes just a year after Palace lifted the FA Cup, confirming another major step in the club’s recent rise.

The decisive moment arrived early in the second half, when Adam Wharton drove forward and tested Augusto Batalla from distance. The goalkeeper pushed the shot away, but the rebound dropped kindly for Mateta, who finished from close range. Palace then created several chances to extend the lead, yet needed disciplined defending to protect the narrow advantage.

Palace win Conference League as Mateta scores

This triumph makes Palace the first club to win a major European title in their debut season in such competition since 1988, when KV Mechelen captured the Cup Winners’ Cup. Palace will now play in the Europa League next season. Glasner departs with silverware, joining a short list of managers who signed off from English clubs with European trophies.

Only two managers had done that before Glasner. Keith Burkinshaw left Tottenham after winning the 1984 UEFA Cup, while Maurizio Sarri departed Chelsea following the 2019 Europa League success. Glasner’s final match in charge therefore sits alongside those achievements, with Palace’s supporters in Leipzig witnessing a landmark night in the club’s history.

Palace edged the overall shot count by 11 attempts to 10, but the underlying data underlined their control. The expected goals figures read 2.57 for Palace and 0.52 for Rayo, reflecting the better quality of chances created by Glasner’s side. Dean Henderson faced only one effort on target, protected well by an organised defensive unit.

Rayo struggled to fashion clear opportunities despite a late push. Maxence Lacroix and Tyrick Mitchell produced important interventions during the closing minutes, clearing dangerous balls and blocking potential efforts. That ensured Henderson remained relatively quiet, as Palace saw out the contest with controlled defending and calm game management, even as tension grew among the travelling support.

Conference League final: Mateta ends drought and makes French history

Mateta entered the final without an away goal for Palace since September, when scoring at West Ham in the Premier League. Each of the previous 11 goals for the club had come at Selhurst Park. The wait ended at a crucial time, with Mateta now the first French player to score in a Conference League final.

That goal also places Mateta in select company. Only two other French players had previously scored for English teams in major European finals. Paul Pogba struck for Manchester United in the 2017 Europa League final, and Olivier Giroud found the net for Chelsea in the 2019 Europa League showpiece. Mateta now joins that list after this decisive finish in Leipzig.

Conference League final: English clubs and regional rivals

The result continues a strong record for English teams in the Conference League. Three of the competition’s first five editions have now been won by clubs from England. West Ham triumphed in the 2022-23 season, Chelsea followed in 2024-25, and Palace now add their name. Brighton, Palace’s rivals, will attempt to match that in the 2026-27 campaign.

For Palace supporters in Leipzig, the moment was captured widely on social media as the final whistle sounded.

The post underlined the scale of the achievement for a club that had never previously played in major European competition.

Conference League final: match flow and missed opportunities

The first half saw Palace struggle to open Rayo up, despite enjoying good spells of possession. Clear chances were rare. At the other end, Rayo twice went close. Alemao failed to connect cleanly from a promising position, dragging wide from short range, while Unai Lopez placed a controlled side-footed strike just beyond the far post.

Palace nearly struck just before the interval. Wharton, not selected in England’s World Cup squad the previous week, delivered a deep cross from the right. Mitchell arrived at the back post with a diving header but could not direct the ball on target. The effort flew wide, leaving the match level at the break with tension building.

Palace’s attacking rhythm improved after half-time, highlighted by Wharton’s driving run for the goal. Confidence grew once Mateta scored. Yeremy Pino almost doubled the advantage with a free-kick that bounced between both posts. The ball then sat up for Mateta, whose follow-up effort clipped the woodwork, keeping Rayo in the contest by the narrowest margin.

Pino remained busy on the right flank, beating markers and creating another excellent opening for Mateta. This time the forward mis-hit the shot, allowing Batalla to turn it wide. Those missed chances left Palace exposed to a late response. However, Rayo could not create a clear opportunity, and Palace’s compact shape closed out the club’s first European trophy.
