Marc Cucurella Transfer To Real Madrid Seals Chelsea Exit

Real Madrid have signed Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a major move confirmed just hours before Spain’s World Cup opener against Cape Verde in Atlanta on Monday, with the European champions expected to start Cucurella at left-back for their first group match.

Madrid are paying a reported 55m (47.5m) for Cucurella, with performance-related add-ons potentially lifting the fee to 60m (51.8m), and the 27-year-old defender has agreed a six-year contract, becoming the first arrival since the return of head coach Jose Mourinho.

Cucurella, who progressed through Barcelona’s youth system before leaving the club, joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2022 and became a regular starter, making 163 appearances in all competitions, during which Cucurella scored nine goals and provided 11 assists from left-back and left wing-back roles.

During the 2024-25 campaign, Cucurella helped Chelsea lift both the Conference League and the Club World Cup, yet the club missed out on European qualification for the 2025-26 season, creating pressure on the squad and increasing expectations that more senior players may depart Stamford Bridge.

Cucurella’s arrival marks the first signing of Mourinho’s second spell in charge of Real Madrid, with Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate expected to follow, while the club also had a 150m bid for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez rejected and remain linked with Bernardo Silva on a potential free transfer.

At Chelsea, Enzo Fernandez was suspended earlier in 2026 after comments expressing a desire to live in Madrid, while forward Liam Delap is understood to be attracting interest from other Premier League sides, underlining the possibility of further changes to Chelsea’s squad after Cucurella’s high-profile move.
