Eloy Room Delivers Record-Setting 15 Saves As Curacao Stands Ground Against Ecuador
Eloy Room delivered a historic goalkeeping display as Curacao held Ecuador to a 0-0 draw at Kansas City Stadium, securing Curacao’s first World Cup point. Room produced 15 saves, the highest total by a goalkeeper in a men’s World Cup match without extra time since records began in 1966.
The result leaves Ecuador third in Group E before facing Germany, while Curacao take confidence from resisting sustained pressure. Ecuador entered the tournament on a 19-match unbeaten run under Sebastian Beccacece but are still searching for their first goal of this World Cup after two games.

Room’s 15 saves match Tim Howard’s famous total for the United States against Belgium in 2014, although Howard’s record came over 120 minutes. Room achieved the same number in normal time. According to historical data, this is the most saves in a regulation World Cup match that finished without extra time.
Those 15 stops also place Eloy Room among an elite group of CONCACAF goalkeepers at World Cups. Over the last 50 years, only five from the region have recorded nine or more saves in a single tournament match, including Mexico’s Guillermo Ochoa and the USA trio Tony Meola, Tim Howard and Brad Friedel.
Data from Opta highlighted how busy the Curacao goalkeeper was throughout the match. Ecuador registered 15 shots on target, the most by a CONMEBOL team in a World Cup game since 1966, while still failing to score. It is also the second-highest total this century, behind Belgium’s 17 against the USA in 2014.
{TABLE_1}Advanced metrics underline Ecuador’s wastefulness against Curacao. Sebastian Beccacece’s side produced 3.05 expected goals, the highest figure for any team that did not score at this World Cup. Of that total, 1.7 xG came from efforts by Enner Valencia, also the largest individual xG tally without a goal at this tournament so far.
{TABLE_2}"It means everything, it feels like a victory, it's the first point at the World Cup, it means everything, he said. It is unreal, the journey where we came from and we are now here and we showed we have real heart, it's an unbelievable feeling. I knew it was a lot of saves. I know it was a record from a long time ago, so I am really proud."
"It was a really good feeling. My first save gave me confidence, I knew it was going to be a busy game. I am little bit bummed because we had chances to score. For us this feels like a victory. I think in 40 years I will remember this, it will be insane. I think I need a statue in Curacao now."
Beccacece focused on the bigger picture after Ecuador failed to convert heavy pressure against Curacao into goals. "Life has taught me you have to always continue to work, always learn, and challenges can become opportunities," said Beccacece, whose team were on a 19-match unbeaten run prior to the World Cup.
"It is normal now to feel this pain, this disappointment, but this is not over yet. We have 100 minutes ahead of us, and we're going to be there in a sound way to try to reach our goals. There are things you cannot explain in soccer.Anything I say might be counter-productive. We wanted to win. We didn't do it. I am the one who bears the responsibility. The team deserved more than they got."
Curacao leave Kansas City with a clean sheet, a record goalkeeping display and a valuable point, while Ecuador must quickly regroup before facing Germany. The match highlighted Eloy Room’s influence for Curacao and underlined Ecuador’s need for sharper finishing if Beccacece’s side are to progress from Group E.
