Dan Ashworth has rejoined the Football Association (FA) as their inaugural chief football officer. Previously, he served as the FA's director of elite development and then as technical director from 2013 to 2019. Afterward, he transitioned to club football, working with Brighton and later Newcastle United in 2022. He also held a sporting director role at Manchester United from July to December 2024.
In his new position at the FA, Ashworth will spearhead the high-performance strategy. His duties include crafting a successful England team and increasing the number of home-grown coaches. Additionally, he will manage the refurbishment of St George's Park national football centre in preparation for Euro 2028, which will be hosted by England, Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland.

Ashworth's return marks a significant step for the FA in enhancing its strategic approach to football development. His experience in both national and club-level roles is expected to bring valuable insights into developing a competitive England team. The focus on nurturing local coaching talent aligns with long-term goals for sustained success.
The renovation of St George's Park is another critical aspect of Ashworth's responsibilities. This facility plays a pivotal role in training and developing players and coaches alike. The upgrades are aimed at ensuring it remains a top-tier centre for football excellence ahead of Euro 2028.
FA CEO Mark Bullingham expressed enthusiasm about Ashworth's appointment: "Dan is a hugely influential and respected figure in the game, who has a long-standing commitment to England Football. We are very happy to welcome him back in this new role." This endorsement underscores Ashworth's reputation within the football community.
The strategic initiatives led by Ashworth are expected to have far-reaching impacts on English football. By focusing on both immediate performance improvements and long-term developmental goals, the FA aims to solidify its position as a leader in international football.
