Kerala Blasters FC has appointed Spanish tactician David Catala as their new head coach on a one-year contract, ushering in a new era for the club. Catala takes over from interim coach T.G. Purushothaman, who stepped in following Mikael Stahre's departure in December 2024.
Catala brings extensive experience from European football, both as a player and a coach. Over the course of his playing career, he made over 500 professional appearances, most notably with AEK Larnaca in Cyprus. Transitioning into coaching, he took charge of AEK Larnaca in May 2021 and later managed Apollon Limassol, NK Istra 1961, and Sabadell FC in Spain.

Despite having led only two training sessions so far, Catala has already outlined his ambitions for the club. "I have big ideas, I have big impressions about the team, about the club, and I can only say that from my side, I'm going to give my best to bring this club where it deserves," he stated, embracing the challenge with determination and professionalism.
Emphasizing his high standards, Catala stated, "I'm going to be very hard, I'm going to be very ambitious. And the challenge for me is the same. I have high ambitions to be the best and to bring out the best in the team." “My goal is to give my best and develop the team, no matter where I am”, he added.
Sporting Director Karolis Skinkys highlighted that bringing in the coach before the season’s conclusion was a calculated move. "That was the reason we wanted the coach to join us before the end of the season—so he could get to know the team and the environment. With a clearer understanding, we can take more informed actions during the off-season and prepare better for the next campaign.”
Arriving near the season’s end, Catala acknowledged the timing but expressed eagerness to prepare for the upcoming Super Cup. Reflecting on the team’s eighth-place finish after three consecutive playoff appearances, he emphasized the need to build a fresh squad.
Catala explained, "Now is a good time to assess what we need for the future and how we can organize everything to form a strong team for next season." He also emphasized the importance of balance. "First and foremost, my priority is to build a compact, strong, and solid team. But at the same time, if you want to win games, you need to score," he added.
Looking ahead to the Super Cup, Catala remained both realistic and ambitious. "The ambition will be there, no doubt. And my team will compete—I have no doubts about that. I can predict and guarantee that the team will fight, give everything, and strive to make an impact in this competition."
