David Moyes Declares He Is Not Finished With Football Management Yet

David Moyes, recently appointed an OBE, confirms he is not ready to retire from football management. He seeks the right opportunity after a successful career managing clubs like West Ham and Manchester United.

David Moyes, a seasoned football manager, is not ready to retire yet. He plans to carefully consider his next career move. Recently honoured as an OBE for his contributions to football, Moyes has managed 697 Premier League games, surpassed only by Arsene Wenger and Alex Ferguson. His career began at Preston North End before moving to Everton in 2002. He later managed Manchester United, Real Sociedad, Sunderland, and West Ham.

Moyes' second stint at West Ham concluded in May after leading the team to the Europa Conference League title in the 2022-23 season. During this period, he won 103 out of 231 matches with a win percentage of 44.59%. This success rate was only exceeded during his time at Manchester United and Preston. Despite receiving job offers this season, Moyes is currently enjoying a break from management.

Moyes Not Finished with Football Management

Reflecting on his career, Moyes shared with BBC Sport that he is not finished with football yet but is enjoying some time off. "I don't consider myself done yet," he said. However, he emphasised that he would not pressure any manager personally because he disliked being in that position himself. Moyes added that as people age, they must ensure they make the right decisions for themselves.

Moyes' successor at West Ham, Julen Lopetegui, has faced challenges since taking over. The Hammers are currently 13th in the Premier League table midway through the season. Their recent defeat to Liverpool highlighted their struggles, with West Ham conceding more goals than any other team in 2024. This poor form has raised questions about Lopetegui's future at the club.

Moyes understands the pressures of managing a top club like Manchester United. Since his departure in 2014, United has had nine different managers. The current head coach Ruben Amorim is under scrutiny after only a few games in charge. Moyes believes managers should be given time to prove themselves and criticised the practice of short-term evaluations.

Moyes expressed that it's unfair to judge a manager's performance within six months or a year. "To say to a manager 'We are giving you six months or a year in the job to see how you do', I don't think that is correct," he stated. He urged clubs to support their managerial choices and allow them time to succeed.

The pressure at Manchester United is unique compared to other clubs due to its high expectations. Moyes noted that while Amorim faces challenges early on, it isn't entirely his fault as he's still adapting to his role.

Moyes remains passionate about football and open to future opportunities if they align with his goals and values. He wants any new role to be positive and avoid difficult situations like relegation battles he's experienced before.
