Rashford Should Stay At Barcelona, Says Frenkie De Jong After Loan Season

Marcus Rashford’s impact at Barcelona this season places the forward at the centre of transfer debate, as Frenkie de Jong publicly backs a permanent move. Rashford has impressed on loan under Hansi Flick and has already matched or exceeded recent output for Manchester United and Aston Villa.

The England international has produced 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions for Barcelona. That gives Rashford 25 direct goal contributions, a total that plays a key role in the club retaining the LaLiga title, and strengthens the case for a full transfer from Manchester United.

Rashford Should Stay at Barcelona

Within Barcelona’s squad, only Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez and Raphinha have more combined goals and assists this season. Rashford also scored a notable free-kick in a title-clinching win over Real Madrid earlier in the month, underlining influence in decisive matches for Flick’s side.

Rashford’s attacking contribution can be set against Barcelona’s other main threats this season in simple terms.

Player Total goal involvements
Lamine Yamal 41
Fermin Lopez 30
Raphinha 28
Marcus Rashford 25

Rashford joined Barcelona on loan after losing regular status at Manchester United and spending six months at Aston Villa. Reports in England suggest United are open to a permanent sale. Rashford has already stated a clear wish to remain at Camp Nou beyond the current agreement.

De Jong has aligned with that stance, and underlined Rashford’s value when speaking to Sport ES. De Jong said: "Yes, I believe [he should stay]. In the minutes he's played, he has given us a lot: goals, assists, depth. He is a fast player who threatens rival defences. I would be delighted if he continued with us."

De Jong also highlighted Rashford’s mindset and integration since arriving in Catalonia. De Jong added: "He arrived here with a lot of enthusiasm. He was very happy to be here, and from the first moment he arrived, you could already see that he wanted to stay. He's tried to adapt as best he could, and I've seen him do well."

The 25 goal involvements with Barcelona this season already top Rashford’s returns from each of the previous two campaigns. Rashford delivered 13 goal contributions for Manchester United in 2023-24, then split 19 across 2024-25, with 10 for United and nine for Aston Villa.

For Barcelona and Manchester United, the numbers and public comments create a clear situation. Rashford has revived form in Spain, Flick has gained a reliable forward option, and De Jong has outlined the dressing room view, leaving club negotiations to decide whether the loan becomes a long-term stay.
