Dean Smith disclosed his interest in signing Jamie Vardy for Charlotte FC. Smith managed Vardy at Leicester City in spring 2023, a period that ended with the Foxes' relegation to the Championship. Despite this, Smith hoped to persuade the 37-year-old striker to join him in the United States.
Smith mentioned, "I did text him and see if he wanted to come over to America, but I knew that was going to be hard once he took Leicester back to the Premier League." Leicester's promotion back to the Premier League dashed any real hopes of a reunion.

Smith expressed confidence in Vardy's ability to excel upon his return to the Premier League. He believes that with proper management, Vardy can still make a significant impact. "It's just his enthusiasm for the game," Smith said. "He doesn't train as much as he used to and he won't get as many minutes as he used to, but if he's used right, he'll be really, really good [this season]. You saw the goals he scored in the Championship."
Meanwhile, Charlotte FC is reportedly negotiating with Newcastle United for winger Miguel Almiron. The Magpies are open to selling Almiron, but convincing him to return to the United States might be challenging. Almiron previously played for Atlanta United and won the MLS Cup before moving to St James' Park in 2019.
This summer, Charlotte FC has already secured Fulham stalwart Tim Ream. The MLS transfer window closes on Wednesday, adding urgency to their negotiations with Newcastle United.
Smith's side continues their efforts in strengthening their squad before the transfer window shuts. The potential addition of Almiron could significantly bolster their attacking options.
Despite not securing Vardy, Smith remains optimistic about his team's prospects and continues exploring opportunities to enhance their lineup.
The focus now shifts towards finalising deals and preparing for the upcoming season with renewed vigour and strategic signings.
