Denmark Claims Narrow 1-0 Win Against Portugal Thanks To Late Goal From Rasmus Hojlund

Rasmus Hojlund's late strike secured Denmark a vital 1-0 win over Portugal in their Nations League quarter-final. Despite a missed penalty by Christian Eriksen, Denmark maintained pressure and capitalised on their chances.

Denmark secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Portugal in the Nations League quarter-final first leg, thanks to Rasmus Hojlund's late goal. Coming off the bench, Hojlund connected with Andreas Skov Olsen's cross to score, making up for Christian Eriksen's earlier penalty miss. This win gives Denmark an edge as they head into the second leg in Lisbon.

Denmark began the match energetically, with Mika Biereth pressuring Diogo Costa into an early error. Costa managed to recover and prevent a goal by turning the ball wide for a corner. Shortly after, Kasper Schmeichel made an impressive save against Pedro Neto, keeping Denmark in the game.

Denmark Edges Past Portugal with Hojlund Goal

In the 23rd minute, Denmark had a golden opportunity when Renato Veiga was penalised for handball. However, Eriksen's penalty was easily saved by Costa. Despite this setback, Denmark continued to press forward. Biereth forced another excellent save from Costa before halftime with a well-timed shot.

The second half saw Denmark maintain their attacking momentum. Gustav Isaksen's powerful drive was narrowly tipped wide by Costa. Hojlund then came close with a low shot that just missed the far post before finally finding the net moments later.

Hojlund's recent form has been impressive, scoring twice in his last two appearances after a dry spell since December. Substituted in at the 69th minute, he created two significant chances according to Opta statistics, more than any other player on the field.

Despite missing his penalty, Eriksen was influential throughout the match. He led with seven shots and three on target while having eight touches inside Portugal’s box. His efforts amounted to 1.29 expected goals (xG), surpassing Portugal’s total of 0.51 xG.

This victory boosts Denmark’s confidence as they prepare for their trip to Lisbon with hopes of reaching the Final Four. The team will look to build on this performance and secure their place in the next stage of the competition.
