Derby County strengthened the push for Championship play-offs with a 1-0 victory at Portsmouth, moving within three points of the top six. The result extended Portsmouth’s poor league run and left John Mousinho’s team still just one point clear of the relegation places.
Sam Szmodics settled the contest with an eighth-minute finish after Portsmouth failed to clear a corner, giving Derby County control and a platform to protect the lead. The win also ended Derby’s sequence of three away league matches without success, easing pressure during a demanding spell.

Underlying numbers highlighted Portsmouth’s frustration. Mousinho’s players generated an expected goals total of 1.72 from 27 attempts, their highest xG figure in any 2025-26 league game, yet could not score. Derby County created an xG of 1 from 10 shots but made the decisive moment count.

Portsmouth’s long-standing struggle against Derby County also stayed in place. Pompey are now winless in 12 Championship and Premier League meetings with Derby, drawing seven and losing four, since a 3-1 home success during the 2007-08 Premier League season. Longer winless sequences exist only against Chelsea, with 26 games, and Arsenal, with 18.

The decisive goal arrived when Derry John Murkin’s corner was cleared only to Szmodics, who controlled before driving the ball past Nicolas Schmid. Soon after, Ben Brereton tested Schmid at the near post, while Millenic Alli’s cross-shot brought Derby goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell into action at the opposite end.
The first half closed with heavy pressure on Portsmouth. Patrick Agyemang went close from a narrow angle, O'Donnell tipping the strike onto the post, before Gustavo Caballero forced another save in stoppage time as Derby County protected the slender advantage into the interval.
John Eustace’s side almost doubled the lead on 59 minutes when Joe Ward’s bending free-kick crashed against the crossbar. Portsmouth then responded through Alli, whose powerful half-volley was well saved by O'Donnell as Derby County’s defence came under sustained pressure.
There were late chances for the hosts. Bobby Clark’s run through the Derby County defence ended with a drive into the side-netting, while Conor Shaughnessy’s header was comfortably held by O'Donnell. Derby then saw out the closing stages to secure three valuable Championship points at Fratton Park.
The outcome left Derby County closer to the Championship play-off positions, with momentum restored after recent away struggles. Portsmouth, still without a league win in five matches, must address both finishing and defensive details while managing a difficult record against Derby in the ongoing survival battle.
