Derek McInnes Reflects On Hearts Exit As He Moves To Rangers
Derek McInnes has left Hearts after one dramatic season, joined Rangers on a three-year contract, and looked back with regret that the chance to manage Hearts did not come earlier, while addressing supporters for the first time since the title collapse.
The former midfielder, who played 34 times for Rangers, almost guided Hearts to the Scottish Premiership title during that single campaign, but the challenge ended painfully on the final day, which left McInnes angry, emotionally drained and initially unwilling to speak publicly.

Hearts travelled into their decisive league match against Celtic knowing a draw would secure a first top-flight crown since 1960, and they even went ahead, but Celtic recovered and won 3-1, turning a potential landmark triumph into a deeply painful defeat.
Across the season, Hearts showed strong consistency and control in the Scottish Premiership, sitting at the top of the table for 250 days, including 226 days in first place from October, which shaped expectations among supporters and increased the disappointment when the title slipped away.
After the league programme ended, McInnes did not speak to fans or media, and club officials cited safety concerns, so frustration built around the silence, until McInnes chose The Hearts Standard as the platform for a long message and farewell to the Hearts support.
In a statement to The Hearts Standard, McInnes said: It was an incredible privilege to manage the football club for the last 12 months. It's such a special football club, and we had such a brilliant season together. I'm well aware I haven't spoken since the last game of the season. I totally understand the frustration from fans around the lack of communication, both from myself and the club, considering the manner in which the season ended. The frustration is justifiable.
McInnes explained that the manner of the late collapse left deep scars, saying personal anger and devastation, together with dismay at "the decisions that had a huge impact on the outcome", influenced the decision to stay silent while attempting to process the events.
Derek McInnes Hearts Rangers future outlook
Looking back over the campaign, McInnes said the squad and staff had poured huge effort into the season, and McInnes has since contacted every player and staff member individually over recent days, expressing gratitude and offering best wishes for the rest of their careers.
McInnes also highlighted backing from the Hearts board, and then turned directly to the Heart of Midlothian support, stressing that the atmosphere made McInnes "feel like one of you" and that McInnes wished Hearts had appointed earlier, so the spell lasted longer than twelve months.
Reflecting on the short tenure, McInnes described the year as brief yet "brilliant", emphasised that the connection with Hearts felt strong despite the painful ending, and closed by stating that McInnes wants "only good things" for Hearts while beginning a new chapter with rivals Rangers.
