Deschamps Faces Criticism As France Falters Against Italy In Nations League

France's coach Didier Deschamps is set to face criticism after a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Italy in the Nations League, citing the team's young squad and physicality issues.

Didier Deschamps is ready to face criticism after France began their Nations League campaign with a 3-1 loss to Italy on Friday. Bradley Barcola gave the hosts an early lead, but Italy responded quickly to secure their first victory over France at the Parc des Princes.

Despite having experienced players like Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, and Marcus Thuram, France struggled offensively. Barcola, making his sixth start for the national team, was a standout performer. He contributed an expected goals (xG) total of 0.45 and had more shots than any other French player.

France Loses to Italy, Deschamps Comments

Les Bleus managed only three shots on target from their 12 attempts, all in the first half. Their expected goals (xG) total was 0.86 compared to Italy's 1.71. Mbappe had another challenging night in front of goal.

Deschamps acknowledged the team's fitness issues and the need for young players like Olise and Manu Kone to gain experience. "I am accustomed to criticism, even if I won more than lost in my career," Deschamps said. "These are necessary steps to grow."

The coach also praised Italy's defensive performance and admitted that maintaining high intensity was tough. "We had started so well, scoring the goal and putting good pressure on Italy," Deschamps told RAI Sport.

Challenges in Maintaining Intensity

Deschamps noted that France's initial strong performance faded due to physical limitations. "It irritates me that our first 20 minutes were so good and then the light went out," he said.

The coach admitted that mistakes allowed Italy to equalise and capitalise on open spaces left by France's high press strategy. "Without a solid block, it became very difficult for us," he added.

Despite winning both the World Cup and Nations League during his tenure, Deschamps is no stranger to criticism. He remains clear-eyed about the team's performance and areas needing improvement.

The next challenge for Les Bleus will be against Belgium in Lyon on Monday. The team will aim to bounce back from this defeat and address their shortcomings.
