Deschamps Confident France Can Overturn Two-Goal Deficit Against Croatia In Nations League

Didier Deschamps remains optimistic about France's chances to recover from a two-goal deficit against Croatia in the Nations League quarter-finals. Despite a disappointing first leg, he aims for improvement in the return match.

Didier Deschamps acknowledged that France was outperformed by Croatia in the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final. Despite a 2-0 defeat, he remains optimistic about overcoming the two-goal deficit. Croatia's victory was secured with first-half goals from Ante Budimir and Ivan Perisic. The return match is scheduled for Sunday, and Deschamps is hopeful for a better outcome.

Budimir's goal marked the fourth header France has conceded in their last three games. This equals the number of headed goals they allowed in their previous 53 matches. Ivan Perisic also made history by becoming the first player since Wayne Rooney in 2015 to score and assist against France in a single game.

Deschamps Optimistic for France's Comeback

In the initial half, France found it challenging to pose any real threat to Croatia. Dominik Livakovic easily saved attempts from Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe. Although France improved after halftime, they couldn't capitalise on their increased pressure, resulting in consecutive losses to Croatia for the first time ever.

Deschamps shared his thoughts with TF1 post-match, stating, "We made a good start, but there were losses of balls, technical errors. We gave opportunities to the opponent." He noted that while the second half showed improvement, inefficiency remained an issue despite Maignan saving a penalty.

This defeat extended Croatia's unbeaten streak against France to three matches. This surpasses their previous record of two matches between June 2004 and March 2011. Deschamps is determined to see attacking improvements when they host Croatia at Stade de France in three days.

Looking Ahead to the Return Leg

"We lost the first set; we're going to make sure we win the second at home," Deschamps stated confidently. He admitted that their first-half performance fell short of expectations but vowed to rectify this in the upcoming match. He emphasised that technical errors were costly and must be addressed.

Kylian Mbappe's performance at Stadion Poljud was also discussed by Deschamps. Making his first appearance since losing 3-1 to Italy last September, Mbappe led his team with four shots on target, ten touches in the opposition box, and four chances created.

Mbappe's Impactful Return

Deschamps commented on Mbappe's display: "I found him very fit. He didn't succeed in everything." Despite not achieving perfection, Mbappe was praised for his availability and effort against Croatia's defensive setup. His presence was felt throughout the match as he consistently sought opportunities.

The upcoming clash at Stade de France presents an opportunity for redemption for Deschamps' squad. With lessons learned from their recent encounter, they aim to overturn their deficit and advance further in the competition.
