Didier Deschamps acknowledged that France fell short in their Nations League quarter-final first leg against Croatia. Despite a 2-0 defeat, he remains optimistic about reversing the two-goal deficit. Croatia's victory came through first-half goals by Ante Budimir and Ivan Perisic, setting up a challenging return leg for France on Sunday.
France's defence has been vulnerable to headed goals recently, conceding four in their last three games. This is as many as they allowed in their previous 53 matches. Perisic's performance was notable, becoming the first player since Wayne Rooney in November 2015 to score and assist against France.

The French team struggled to pose a threat in the first half, with Dominik Livakovic easily saving attempts from Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe. Although France improved after halftime, they couldn't capitalise on their pressure, resulting in consecutive losses to Croatia for the first time.
"We made a good start but had ball losses and technical errors," Deschamps told TF1 post-match. "The second half was much better. Maignan saved the penalty. After that, it went on. We lost the ball." He noted that despite improvements, efficiency was lacking.
Croatia extended their unbeaten streak against France to three matches with this win, surpassing their previous two-match run between June 2004 and March 2011. As France prepares to host Croatia at Stade de France in three days, Deschamps is eager for an attacking resurgence.
"We lost the first set; we're going to make sure we win the second at home," Deschamps stated. He emphasised that their first-half performance didn't reflect their capabilities and vowed to rectify this in the upcoming match.
Deschamps also commented on Kylian Mbappe's performance at Stadion Poljud. The Real Madrid star returned to national duty after missing out since a 3-1 loss to Italy last September. Mbappe led his team with four shots on target, ten touches in the opposition box, and four chances created.
"I found him very fit," Deschamps remarked about Mbappe's efforts against Croatia's low block defence. "He didn't succeed in everything but was very available." Despite not achieving perfection, Mbappe showed significant effort throughout the match.
The upcoming match at Stade de France presents an opportunity for France to overturn their deficit and demonstrate their potential against Croatia once more.
