Di Maria Reflects On Medication Use Following Argentina's Heartbreaking Final Losses

Angel Di Maria reveals he continues to take medication to cope with the emotional impact of losing three finals with Argentina. Despite past disappointments, he reflects on his successful international career and expresses hope for a future role with the national team.

Angel Di Maria has shared that he continues to take medication to handle the stress and disappointment from losing three consecutive finals with Argentina. Over three years, he faced defeats in two Copa America finals and the 2014 World Cup, where Argentina lost 1-0 to Germany in Brazil. Despite these setbacks, Di Maria played a crucial role in Argentina's recent international triumphs.

Di Maria was instrumental in Argentina's victory at the Copa America in 2021, scoring the only goal against Brazil in the final. He also scored the opening goal in the Qatar World Cup final three years ago. With 141 appearances for Argentina, only Javier Mascherano (147) and Lionel Messi (191) have more caps than him. He retired from international football last summer.

Di Maria Talks Medication After Finals Losses

Di Maria scored 31 goals for his country, ranking third on Argentina's all-time list behind Sergio Aguero (41) and Messi (112). Despite achieving everything possible at the international level, including winning the Finalissima in 2022, past failures still linger in his mind. "Because of that I'm still taking the meds," Di Maria told Infobae as reported by ESPN.

He expressed guilt for teammates who missed out on experiencing glory. "Who remembers the boys that reached that World Cup final and didn't win?" he asked. "Very few, it seems unfair to me." Di Maria believes those who played before contributed to their recent successes.

Although Di Maria has ended his international career, he hopes to return to Argentina's national team in a different capacity after retiring completely from football. "I was there for 16 years [with the national team] and it is as if I had been in a club," he said. He feels tempted by the idea of being involved again because of his deep connection with the team.

Reflecting on his decision to retire from international play, Di Maria stated, "It's difficult, but I think I made the right decision." He achieved everything he wanted during his time with Argentina and left on his own terms. He hopes to contribute again someday in another role.
