Bengaluru, September 6: Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has signed a new contract with the club, apparently putting an end to rumours that the Argentine could leave the Spanish capital for a new challenge.

There were rumours about Simeone's future in recent months as he had been linked with his former club Inter Milan and as a potential successor of Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger however, it seems the Argentine has now made up his mind to stay at the Wanda Metropolitano and wants to begin a new chapter with his side.

The 47-year-old who guided Atletico to the semi-finals of the Champions League and helped them to finish third in La Liga last season has put pen to paper on a two-year improved deal replacing the previous one which was due to expire next year June.

A club statement confirmed the news which read: "Diego Pablo Simeone's contract extension is a reality. Our coach signed his new contract that ties him to Atletico Madrid for two further seasons, until June 30, 2020.

"Hence, we confirm the news that the rojiblanco fans were greatly hoping for.

"There is total synergy between the club and the coach."

Simeone is currently the second longest-serving manager in the European continent with only Arsenal's veteran manager Arsene Wenger ahead of him.

The Former Argentine midfielder Simeone has established himself as one of the best managers in the world over the years and has already helped the club attain Europa League success in his first season in charge as well as winning the European Super Cup and the Copa del Rey the following season.

The Argentine also inspired his team to win their 10th Domestic league over Real Madrid and Barcelona in 2013-14 and even guided them to Champions League finals, however, lost the match in the extra time to Real Madrid.

The Rojiblanco are currently unbeaten in La Liga this season, currently occupy fourth in the league table and will play away to Valencia this Saturday (September 9).
