Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has tragically passed away at 28 due to a car accident. The incident occurred in Zamora, Spain, shortly after midnight on Thursday. Jota's brother, Andre Silva, also died in the crash. Andre was 26 and played for Penafiel, a Portuguese second-tier team.
Jota had an illustrious career with 398 professional appearances, including 182 for Liverpool since joining from Wolves in September 2020. He was instrumental in Liverpool's Premier League victory in the 2024-25 season and played a key role for Portugal in their Nations League win against Spain on June 8.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) expressed profound grief over the loss of both brothers. "Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 international appearances, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person," read their statement. They pledged to honour their legacy daily.
Jota began his football journey with Pacos de Ferreira before moving to Atletico Madrid in 2016. He spent a season on loan at Porto, where his brother also played in the youth team. FC Porto released a statement expressing deep sorrow and extending condolences to their family and friends.
Liverpool FC shared their devastation over Jota's passing, stating they were informed about the tragic accident involving him and his brother. The club requested privacy for the family during this difficult time and assured them of full support.
Portugal's Prime Minister Luis Montenegro paid tribute, acknowledging Jota as an athlete who greatly honoured Portugal's name. "The news of the death of Diogo Jota... is unexpected and tragic," he said, offering condolences to their family.
Jota's career included stints at Atletico Madrid and Porto before joining Wolves initially on loan in 2017. During his time at Liverpool, he won the Premier League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup. Internationally, he secured two Nations League titles with Portugal.
The Football Association expressed its devastation over Jota's death. "Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Diogo's family, friends and teammates at Liverpool and Portugal," they stated.
The FPF has requested UEFA observe a minute's silence before Portugal women's team's European Championship match against Spain on Thursday as a mark of respect for Jota and his brother.
A statement from Guardia Civil confirmed that the accident happened at 12:30 am on the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla in Zamora province. This tragedy comes just days after Jota married his long-term partner on June 22; they have three children together.
