Dortmund Secure 2-0 Win Over Atalanta To Kickstart Champions League Play-off

Borussia Dortmund took a decisive lead in their Champions League play-off against Atalanta, winning 2-0 at Signal Iduna Park. Guirassy opened the scoring and set up Beier as Dortmund asserted control. The result highlights Dortmund's European form and sets up a firm lead ahead of the return leg.

Borussia Dortmund moved close to the Champions League last 16 after a 2-0 home win over Atalanta in the play-offs first leg. Serhou Guirassy scored early and later set up Maximilian Beier. The Bundesliga side created several clear chances and may feel the margin should have been wider.

The result gives Dortmund a strong platform before the return match in Italy, yet Atalanta remain in touch. The Serie A side restricted further damage after half-time, keeping the tie alive despite struggling to create pressure. Niko Kovac will still expect a difficult second leg away from Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund beat Atalanta 2-0

Dortmund struck within three minutes, punishing Atalanta’s slow start. Julian Ryerson, who had supplied four assists in the Bundesliga win over Mainz, delivered a precise cross from the right. Guirassy met it with a firm header, leaving the goalkeeper with little chance and giving Dortmund early control of the contest.

The hosts then kept forcing openings, especially from dead-ball situations. Ryerson’s set-piece delivery troubled Atalanta’s defence several times. Waldermar Anton should have converted in the 41st minute, but headed over from close range. That miss did not punish Dortmund, as pressure on the visitors increased again almost immediately.

Less than a minute after Anton’s chance, Dortmund found a second goal. Guirassy combined neatly with Felix Nemcha on the left wing. After the one-two, Guirassy drove into the penalty area and slid the ball across goal, where Beier arrived unmarked and finished a simple tap-in for a 2-0 lead.

After the interval, Dortmund continued to threaten mostly through corners and free-kicks. One Ryerson corner reached Julian Brandt at the edge of the box, but Brandt sent a rising effort over the bar. Atalanta limited clear chances from open play, yet still offered little attacking response at the other end.

Expected goals data underlines Dortmund’s control of the first leg, even if the score stayed at 2-0.

The xG figures highlight how few dangerous moments Atalanta produced, despite seven attempts. Dortmund’s nine shots were usually from better positions, reflected in the higher xG. Guirassy’s opener alone accounted for 0.45 of Dortmund’s 2.09 xG, showing how valuable that early breakthrough was in shaping the match.

That record continued against Atalanta. Along with scoring from the only shot Guirassy took, the forward had the most touches inside the penalty area with seven. Guirassy also created three chances, joint-highest in the match, and won three aerial duels, again joint-best on the pitch.

Ryerson’s influence has also grown during 2026 in all competitions. The full-back now has nine assists in nine competitive matches in 2026. Among clubs from Europe’s top five leagues, only Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise has more, with 10 assists in nine games. Dortmund will rely on that supply again in Bergamo.

The first-leg result leaves Dortmund in a strong position in this Champions League play-offs tie, yet not secure. Atalanta carry a two-goal deficit into the home leg but have shown resilience in European competition before. Dortmund’s missed chances could still matter if Atalanta strike early in the return fixture.
