East Bengal attracted unwanted attention on Wednesday amid their sensational victory in Durand Cup 2023 as reports emerged that a section of their fans were accused of racism against travelling NorthEast United fans at the Salt Lake Stadium, aka Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VBYK), in Kolkata on Tuesday.
The incident reportedly happened during the Durand Cup 2023 semifinal match between East Bengal and North East United, which the former won in a penalty shooout after trailing 0-2 at one stage of the game. The incident was brought to light by NorthEast United, who took to Twitter to condemn the behaviour in their press release.

North East United fans were provided a designated spot at the Stadium for the match and reports read that they were not just subject to racial abuse but had objects hurled at them from the home fans' stand. Some reports also emerged that the incident was instigated after NorthEast United supporters, who turned up in small numbers for the game, made chants mocking their rivals when they were leading 2-0 at one stage.
While the reports of NEUFC chants couldn't be verified, videos are doing round on social media showing some of the East Bengal supporters indulding in violent activities at the stadium. NorthEast United FC took to Twitter to release their statement, saying there were act of racism and hooliganism against their fans.
"NorthEast United FC are deeply disturbed by the recent incident of racism, hooliganism & violence directed towards some of our fans during the Durand Cup semi-final match against East Bengal FC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Tuesday.
"Racism has no place in football, or in any aspect of life, and we unequivocally condemn such behaviour. Our fans are an integral part of our team, and we stand united against any form of discrimination. We have already brought this matter to the attention of the tournament organisers, and the local officials.
"We'd like to thank the Indian Army and the local police officials for taking swift action against the perpetrators. We are also grateful to them for providing adequate protection to our fans and escorting them to their desired location.
"NorthEast United FC is committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all fans, regardless of their background. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that our matches are a celebration of unity, diversity, and mutual respect.
To our fans, we want you to know that we stand by you. Your passion and unwavering support makes our club special, and we will do everything in our power to ensure that you can enjoy our matches without fear of discrimination."
East Bengal released a statement soon after, distancing themselves from the behaviour of such elements in the fandom. "East Bengal condemns all forms of racism. There is no room for discrimination in football, a sport which unites people," read the club's statement.
