The Durand Cup 2024 is set to begin with last year's winners, Mohun Bagan Super Giant taking the stage on the first match of the tournament on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK).
The defending champions, the Mariners will begin their 2024-25 football season with a match against Downtown Heroes of Srinagar in a Group A. The game is set to give a glimpse of the old players and the new ones that have recently joined the club.

Mohun Bagan and Downtown Heroes are meeting for the first time in the history of the two clubs. Barring the ongoing Calcutta Football League, the Mariners' last match was last season against Mumbai City in the Indian Super League final which they lost by a 1-3 margin.
Mohun Bagan are starting the tournament as the defending champions. They are also entering the tournament as last season's Indian Super League Shield winners. That was under coach Antonio Lopez Habas. After the season ended, they appointed Jose Francisco Molina as the new coach and intend to capitalize on their success under the new head coach.
Under the new coach, the Mariners have brought in prominent foreign signings this summer transfer window, such as Jamie Maclaren, Greg Stewart, Alberto Rodriguez, and Tom Aldred. The champs have a history of progressing slowly and steadily at the start of the season while the Downtown Heroes will be eager for an encore.
Downtown Heroes FC, now in their fourth year, are bringing a unique viewpoint to the competition by focussing on developing young domestic talent. Despite their brief existence, they made their IndianOil Durand Cup debut last season and will compete in this year second time in a row.
