Durand Cup 2024 has undergone significant changes to its quarterfinal fixtures due to concerns raised by Kolkata Police in the aftermath of a tragic incident in the city.
The rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital led to widespread unrest, including reported vandalism within the hospital premises. This incident expectedly created security concerns, especially regarding the highly anticipated Kolkata Derby between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan.

In response to these concerns, the Durand Cup organisers have made the decision to relocate certain quarterfinal matches, including those involving the Kolkata giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, from Kolkata to Shillong and Jamshedpur. The decision was made after consulting with all relevant stakeholders, including team representatives and local authorities.
A statement from the Durand Cup Local Organizing Committee emphasized that the decision was made with the safety of players, officials, and fans in mind. "The Local Organizing Committee, in consultation with the Kolkata Police, has decided to move the second quarterfinal from Kolkata to Shillong due to the current situation in the city. We understand the significance of the Kolkata Derby, but the safety and security of everyone involved in the tournament is our top priority," the statement read.
The tournament, which began on July 27, 2024, features 24 teams, including all 12 Indian Super League (ISL) teams and one foreign team from Nepal. The final is scheduled for August 31, 2024, at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata, barring any further changes.
This rescheduling underscores the impact of external events on major sporting tournaments and the importance of adapting to ensure the safety of all participants.
