Durand Cup Final 2026: East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan Set for Kolkata Derby Showdown
Kolkata, August 22: Four weeks after Mohun Bagan Super Giant edged East Bengal FC in the opening game of the tournament, the two Kolkata giants will meet again at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Sunday, with the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup title at stake.
The final brings the tournament back to where it began, with Mohun Bagan carrying an unbeaten record into the showpiece and East Bengal looking to avenge their only defeat of the campaign. The Kolkata Derby has already shaped the tournament, and Sunday's meeting will decide which side finishes with the trophy.

A Rematch With Added Stakes
Mohun Bagan opened the tournament with a 1-0 victory over East Bengal on July 25, with Sahal Abdul Samad scoring the decisive goal in a tight Group A encounter. The Mariners then underlined their attacking strength with an 8-0 win over South United FC and a 6-0 victory against CISF Protectors to finish top of the group.
East Bengal responded emphatically to their opening defeat. Antonio López Habas's side thrashed CISF Protectors 8-0 before beating South United FC 5-0 to qualify for the knockout stage as one of the two best runners-up. Since that opening-day setback, East Bengal have not lost a game.
Both Sides Tested In Knockouts
The knockout rounds have presented a very different challenge to the group stage.
East Bengal edged Indian Army FT 1-0 in the quarter-final, with PV Vishnu scoring in the 38th minute. They were then taken to penalties by Sporting Club Delhi after a goalless semi-final, eventually progressing in the shootout.
Mohun Bagan also needed penalties to reach the final. After drawing 1-1 with Jamshedpur FC in the quarter-final, the Mariners prevailed 9-8 in a marathon shoot-out. Their semi-final against defending champions NorthEast United FC ended goalless in rain-affected conditions before Vishal Kaith's saves from Robin Yadav and Parthib Gogoi helped Mohun Bagan win 4-3 on penalties.
The numbers underline the defensive strength of both finalists. Mohun Bagan have scored 16 goals and conceded just once in six matches, while East Bengal have scored 14 and also conceded only once - in the opening derby.
History Favours A Close Contest
Sunday will be the 13th meeting between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in a Durand Cup final. The two sides have five final victories apiece, while two other finals ended with the clubs being declared joint champions.
Their most recent final meeting came in 2023, when Mohun Bagan defeated a 10-man East Bengal 1-0 through Dimitrios Petratos's 71st-minute strike.
There is also a major milestone at stake. Mohun Bagan, already the record 17-time champions, can extend their lead to 18 titles. East Bengal, with 16 crowns, can draw level with their oldest rivals by lifting the trophy on Sunday.
Key players could decide the final
Sahal has been one of Mohun Bagan's standout performers, scoring the winner against East Bengal in the opening game before adding a hat-trick against CISF Protectors. Manvir Singh has also contributed three goals, while goalkeeper Vishal Kaith has twice made the difference in penalty shootouts.
East Bengal will look towards captain Mohammed Basim Rashid, who has carried much of their creative and set-piece responsibility. He hit the crossbar twice in the semi-final before converting the decisive penalty. At the other end, goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill has also emerged as a key figure after saving penalties in both normal time and the shoot-out against Sporting Club Delhi.
Mohun Bagan have further attacking options in Brazilian midfielder Miguel Figueira and India winger Lallianzuala Chhangte. Both were introduced from the bench in the semi-final after being registered for the knockout stages.
Tactics And Temperament
The final could come down to a battle between East Bengal's defensive organisation and counter-attacking threat and Mohun Bagan's greater emphasis on possession and territorial control.
Speaking ahead of the final, Habas has urged his players not to get carried away by the occasion.
"The Kolkata Derby is a uniquely special match in India, but we have to approach it like any other game. In fixtures of this magnitude, you don't need any extra motivation; you simply need to control your emotions for the full 90 minutes," he said.
Dilmperis, meanwhile, believes the mental battle will be crucial.
"These games are won in the mental battle, and tomorrow we have to master our emotions to get the win," the Mohun Bagan head coach said.
With both teams boasting near-identical defensive records and East Bengal having lost only once throughout the competition, the final promises another tightly contested chapter in one of Indian football's oldest rivalries. Four weeks after the tournament began with a Kolkata Derby, the same fixture will now decide the champion.
